A lot of people now are saying that we should just blow it up. However, due to the makeup of our roster, it's actually not so easy to come up with realistic scenarios in which Danny would bother trading any of the key pieces (blow it up) instead of just waiting for them to expire this summer.
Let's hear some ideas of what you think we might see happen around the trade deadline this season if the team is still struggling just to get to / stay at .500 a month or two from now.
Ray, PP and KG will be here all year. PP because he has 2 more years and won't be leaving unless there's a mutual decision to part ways with the team.
Ray and KG are larger expiring deals. To get anything of value for them, he'd have to take back crappy contracts and thereby kill any efforts to maintain cap flexibility for the next 2 years. That won't be happening.
Rondo is the foundation of the team now. He's staying unless Danny can land one of the handful of better players in the league but that's not happening.
The only real trade chips I could see moved that would actually help his team going forward is JO and Bass. JO's deal isn't huge and another contender might be willing to move a moderate talent or bad player with a pick for a backup center. Bass is still looking like a 6th man contender and he has a pretty reasonable contract. A number of contenders would love to have him.
I wouldn't move either of next year's picks simply because they figure to be decent picks in a very good draft so C's could have a shot at picking up 2 starting-quality young players. I'd be reluctant to move them unless I'm getting a very good young player in exchange.
The FA market coming up isn't very deep or good. C's would be better off signing stopgaps for a year, keeping their young players with cheap deals, maintain as much cap space for the 2013 FA market which is much deeper in talent and make a splash for 1 if not 2 top level FA's. Hopefully JJJ, Moore, Bradley, Steimsma and the 2 1st round rookies develop into decent players and the C's can be right back in the thick of it. If they keep Bass and Green, those are another couple of good players to keep around to provide nice depth on the roster. OR Danny might decide he's got enough good pieces with that bunch to try another set of KG/Ray-type trades to pair a couple of stars with Rondo
Just my thoughts.
