After a great start in the first game, 7-8, he has now regressed and is shooting 59 percent from the line, 22-37. The good news is he is going to the line a lot more, as it took him 14-15 games to get to 37 free throws last year. The bad news is he still cannot make them.

However, I accept that he will never be a good free throw shooter. It could hurt the Celtics at some point, but the rest of his game is so good, I am going to try to stop complaining about his poor free throw shooting.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I've somewhat accepted it, but I still have hope.

His free throw shooting is what is really putting a cap on his potential.

It's hard to take over at the end of games without them.

Well, the first step to making free throws in real games, is getting to the line in the first place. So maybe with him being more aggressive, you can be cautiously optimistic.

That's what everyone said last season and he ended up shooting ~57%...which is incidentally just 2% worse than his FT% 7 games this season as well.

Actually, the more disappointing part was that the whole "attack the basket more and get to the FT line" thing lasted about 2 games.

Here's some motivation:
Rajon, your good friend Kendrick Perkins is shooting free throws at close to 80% (.792) so far this year.

That was probably made possible by surgical hand reduction, since it's impossible to shoot free throws that well with hands as large. Oh wait...

I certainly hope his FT shooting improves, but even if it doesn't, he should continue going to the rack because (and this is something that a lot of coaches & players don't seem to realize, which drives me nuts) he can at least get the opposition in foul trouble -- can get certain individuals in foul trouble, and put Boston in the bonus sooner rather than later, which makes it easier for other guys (such as Pierce, Allen) to get to the line. I'm always dumbfounded when a team DOESN'T attack a particularly good player on the opposition in an effort to get that opponent into early foul trouble and out of the game.

Regretfully, NBA rules do not allow shooting free throws in lieu of another player -- which seems to be the only way Rondo can be helped at this point.

He can "injure" himself. It guarantees a better free-throw shooter in our team right?

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
I was really happy with Rondo after game 1. He confidently shot outside shots and made his free throws. It was like he was making a point to all the people that don't believe in him. Unfortunately, he has regressed back to his old self - which certainly isn't bad, but also isn't the new and improved Rondo we were hoping for. He is still one of the most dynamic players in the NBA and I am happy to have him.

  • You say when......
Okay, I'd say maybe he should / could be a little better at it...but at some point, don't you think this is micro-analysis..? He improved his shooting..and on this team, he is still pretty much running alone...not much on fast breaks. When you look for perfection, judge everyone by the same standards...all around, all skills...you can't always have more, more, more...Rondo doesn't shhot free throws well, Ray doesn't lead fast breaks...pp doesn't lead fast breaks...kg has some weaknesses....

Rondos short jumper has improved, he is like alot of players , can hit a shot quick, but when he has all day to look and think about it , he fails.   Rondo can hit the jumper where the motion is fluid.....ROndo is not a standstill marksman like PP .  Thats why he can't hit a free throw. He stands there and the natural mechanics fall apart. When he doen't have time to think or aim , he makes amazing shots.

So , I think Rondos pull up and release jumper will continue to get bettter.  Free throws is practice thing , he needs to stand and shoot 1000's a week , till the shot become natural. Unless he's willing to practice for hours and hours on end , no he won't get alot better.  He'll have to actual practice ...and not rely on natural ability.

It's extremely frustrating and I don't accept it in the same way I never accepted careless 4th quarter interceptions by Brett Farve and the way Deion Sanders wouldn't tackle people.

There are 7th graders that work harder on their free throws and get better results. You'd think for 10mill a year Rondo would care.

Rondo's act is getting thin
