There have been questions about the Celtics this season, and there will continue to be up and into the playoffs.

But not about Ray Allen. At age 36 he is averaging 20 points per game, shooting 61.1 percent from three and 56.5 percent overall (up from a still good 49.1 percent last year). It’s only six games, but his PER is higher than it has ever been in his career.

This year is the second and last year of Allen’s extension with the Celtics, and he tells Chris Tomasson of Fox Sports Florida he’d like to stay a Celtic for a little while.

Allen will be a free agent next summer. When asked if he wants to re-sign with the Celtics, he offered a quick, “Yeah.” Does he think he can get another multi-year deal from them at 37?

“Yeah,” said Allen, in the second-year of a two-year, $20 million contract. “That’s what I want.”

He’s playing well, teams will be lined up for a shot at him. But will that be Boston? They also have Kevin Garnett’s deal up and the Celtics need to decide whether to bring them back and make another run or get on with the business of rebuilding. Which option may well depend on how Boston does in the playoffs.

But whatever Boston decides Ray Allen will have plenty of people lined up for his services. Likely including a few contenders.

If it doesn't kill us cap-wise I'd say Danny definitely better look to extending him. If any 36 yr old deserves a multi-year deal, Ray Allen does. Especially after what he has shown thus far this season.

Ray's not a centerpiece anymore, he's a role player, and will have to wait in line with the other complementary pieces this offseason while Danny tries to work a deal for building block.

Sorry, Ray.

That said, I think he'll be welcome, but might not like the $$.

Players shouldn't be eligible for multi-year deals past the age of 35.

One year maximum length contracts.

I think 2 years at $5 mil per year would be suitable

Yikes.  Sure, he might be worth it, but at who's expense?  Those FA's we think are walking through that door?

Not wise to tie up money in an aging complementary player, even a smooth one like Ray.

If he can transition to the bench well then a 3 year is the most I'd think would be possible.  It would all depend on the $ though, to me he'd be smart to do 3 year deal, each year his salary goes down a bit but also gets a no trade clause, his refusal.
Now that is in my own perfect celtics world, agents and gms tend to get in the way. ::)

I don't think that's true at all.  We can argue over the price but everyone would love to play with a guy like Ray Allen as long as the dollar amount is reasonable.  You don't think Miami has been trying to get him away from us for example?

Sure they (and the Knicks) would like Ray, lots of teams would, but the price is a pretty important factor these days.

If Ray will take Eddie House money, sure.  That's either a minimum deal or a fraction of the MLE, not $5M per for multiple years.  And I think 2 years is being generous.

Let's keep in mind what it takes to get Ray those high % and points totals:  a total team committment to get him open (triple staggered screens, Rondo passing - that's the whole team working to get Ray a 20+ft jumper).  It's not like he's getting those 20pts on his own.  The stats are a bit of a mirage.

I think a similar deal as last time, a two-year contract with the second year as a player option, would satisfy Ray.  Since the second year is an option year, that means he can't be traded without his consent during the first year.  It sounds like he would value that.  Of course, he should give some sort of discount off of his market value to get that sort of deal.  It should be more than the full MLE but less than the $10 million/year he is currently getting.

There's NO reason NOT to give him a two-year $15 million dollar deal.  That's a can't miss.  Does anybody really believe Ray is going to lose his ability to shoot suddenly next season?  That's a fair wage for a key roleplayer even if it is off the bench

They need to get two big time free agents if possible with their cap space and they can't take a chance on using some of it on Ray....as much as he might be worth it.  It there is still some vet minimum type contact still in the new CBA then use that.

Dont forget, two years ago he went 1-20 in the finals.

Yeah after this year unless we pull of a major coup in FA that I don't see coming at the moment I don't want Ray tying up any future cap space.

If he does go and finish his career somewhere else I'll miss him fiercely. Its always a pleasure to watch him shoot.
