Other NBA players would likely vote for PP, but this was voted for by the public.  Rondo likely wouldnt make it, because to be considered for the list, the general public had to have at least a 10% awareness of them.  Outside of hardcore NBA fans, not many people are that familiar with Rondo.

Haha. Rondo never sells jerseys, gets votes for the all-star team, shows up on sportscenter or the like and the Celts never draw a big audience when they're on national tv. At least, as far as you know...

As I said before, People who buy sports jerseys (or vote for all star teams, watch a lot of sportscenter, etc) are hardcore sports fans.  Those people will have a high % awareness of most starting NBA players, and would have probably led to a very different list being compiled.

The list was made by polling people who had as little as a 10% awareness of the players.  Thats more like someone who heard their name before and knew maybe a thing or two about them.  Someone who only knows the names on the 1st page of the sports section, cuz thats all they ever read.

Look at it like this...outside of Boston, how many peoples girlfriends do you think know who Rondo is?  Almost none.  They know Humphries and Odom well, have seen gossip magazine stories about "metta world peace", and have probably seen a few sports page headlines about the others.

Rondo is NOT anywhere near one of the most "recognized" players in he league.  To basketball fans he is, but to regular people who only have a passing interest in sports (the type with only a 10% awareness of who a player is), he doesnt even rank.  Those people would very likely think Humphries and Odom, are bigger name players than Rondo, because their only connection to basketball is reality TV, and those 2 were advertised as "NBA stars"...while the name "Rondo" has never appeared in any of their shows, or magazines.

It's not a knock on Rondo...just a result of the survey parameters

I guess it's a somewhat different definition of terms, but I would consider people who vote for all-star teams to be casual fans, not hardcore. But do you have any evidence that Rondo wasn't among those with a 10% recognition, or that the list of players recognized by the public in general would vary widely from that of casual fans?

Given the popularity of the Lakers team nationally and globally, I think that is one of the main reasons why PP is so high on the list.  If you're a Laker fan, you probably hate the Celtics.  Of all the current Celtics Pierce is no doubt the truest Celtic and the face of the franchise for his generation.  And really by the same token most Celtics fans would probably vote Kobe as their most hated.

So the list breaks down to:
People in famous relationships: Kris Humphries, Tony Parker, Lamar Odom
Miami Heat: LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwayne Wade
Lakers: Kobe Bryant, Metta World Peace (and ex-Laker Lamar Odom, for the double whammy)
Carmelo Anthony
Paul Pierce

Tony Parker?!?!?!  Did they only poll a group jealous teenage boys?  Anything other than LeBron or Kobe at #1 is criminal.

Also, does someone mind explaining Melo to me?  Where are the guys like Mike Bibby, or the floppers like Noah or Varejao?
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

This makes sense.  Also add in that Pierce is generally hated by Knick fans and you've got a lot of people in two of the major metro centers of the free world who are likely to vote Pierce onto that list!

NBA Officiating - Corrupt?  Incompetent?  Which is worse?  Does it matter?  It sucks.

List makes a lot of sense to me.

Pierce's personality would so rub me the wrong way if I wasn't a Celtics fans. Kinda like Lebron but worse. I think with Parker, the affairs may have caused this as much as the celebrity wife.

Melo is probably as overrated as you can be in the NBA and has the great "Don't snitch roots" starting him off on the wrong foot. He was also in the press way too much last season, which was actually not his fault.

Was Wade anywhere near this list before teaming with Lebron and Bosh?

This list is completely irrelevant anyway since it doesn't matter how many people dislike you. All that matters is how many people like you, and to some degree, the general interest in you.

How on Earth do you measure this "less than 10% awareness" BS? How do you quantify awareness? What parameters did they use to judge this? In the end, a poll like this is completely voluntary, and the people most likely to agree are ones who like the NBA to some degree, or at least like sports. What if they have "15% awareness"? Does that magically mean they don't know who Rondo is?

This is an idiotic poll, with suspect paramaters.

I don't know how many of you work in the sciences, or with statistics, but I do, and this looks like a classic case of observer bias. Instead of actually trying to find results, they self-selected the population pool to get the results they "wanted."

There's a ton of money spent on marketing and, thus, a ton of money spent on marketing research.  The firms that do this sort of research will give in-depth information about awareness and perception in specific local markets and what attributes drive positive and negative impressions.

This list is basically free advertising for the companies that provide this service.  Like a lot of political polling, the overall numbers often matter less than the crosstabs and other data that can be analyzed.  It's most useful to someone who would be in a position to consider hiring Terrell Owens as a spokesperson.  I don't think any of us are in that category.

In general though, most athletes who are at the top of these lists tend to fall into three categories: criminals, people perceived as prima donnas, and people who have been in the news so much that a lot of people are fatigued and tired of hearing about them.  Fair or not, I think that there are a lot of people out there who see Pierce as a prima donna type player.  We love him for tweeting about taking his talents to South Beach.  Other people hate him for "the wheelchair".

For the record, the article doesn't look like it's claiming that Rondo isn't in the 10% awareness group. It seems to be saying that, out of the players that are in the group of 10+% public awareness, the ten players mentioned were viewed in a negative light the most often. It doesn't say that they're the only people with that level of "noticeability", it doesn't say how many players were in that group, and it doesn't say which players were in that group. They aren't saying that Rondo isn't known, just that either he's not known or that he's known but not viewed unfavorably.
