Donny Marshall: Celts still considering trading Rondo (merged)

Rondo, and maybe our first round pick to Oklahoma City for Westbrook, and Nazr Mohammed.

I think Oklahoma might eventually realize that a player that takes the ball outta Durant's hand instead of having a player that can get him the easiest shots possible is for the best for them.

Rondo has a pretty friendly contract for a pure PG that can move the ball like he does, Westbrook is probably gonna command a max deal after this year. The money that they save by acquiring Rondo as their PG they can use to focus on resigning Harden as their pure SG and getting some more bench depth.

I would do it as the Celtics, Westbrook is a decent PG with spreading the floor, but it also gives them the scoring on the perimeter that they need and they get the size they need with Nazr. I think for the future, players might want to come here to play with an up and coming elite scoring PG.

I know I sound like a broken record but I really hope they move on from Rondo. His lack of a jumper and ft shooting kills them come playoff time.

I would love to see the Celtics get Nash, Lopez and 2012 first rounder from Phoenix in exchange. Their style is perfect for Rondo and they don't have to win championships over there.

If we're giving up Rondo's future for Nash and a big man I'd hope Danny held out for Gortat.

The Celtics would be better off having Lopez and Jermaine this season and cap space to sign and absorb going forward than Gortat.

Gortat only makes 6.8 million per year, for a 27 year old center of his talents thats a very good deal. He's a far better player than Robin Lopez.

We'd still have max salary space anyways.

True, but with Lopez instead of Gortat the C's would be close to 2 max deals, which may make all the difference in the world for someone like Howard and Williams (maybe they see Boston with Pierce as a better place to play than Brooklyn).

Given the financial hit that Williams would have to take I don't think that will happen. Its possible but if we're giving away Rondo to "win now" then lets win now.

The difference to winning now with Gortat and Lopez for this year with Nash/KG/Ray is a huge one.

O'Neal would almost have to be included to make the numbers work. The C's would be in better win now shape with Jermaine and Lopez instead of Gortat. And for the future: Lopez is 5 years younger, still developing and getting paid 1/3 as much with a team friendly contract. The value is in Lopez.

Well it is a good thing he has a cap clearing expring deal that aligns with Ray/KG/Jermaine/Rasheed. Otherwise he probably wouldn't be mentioned so much in these Rondo trades.

My theory is that Donny was not kidding that people would be surprised by the destination, and the C's are reviving 3-way talks with Houston and the Lakers, with the Lakers getting Rondo and Ray, Houston getting Gasol, and the C's getting Martin, Scola, and Dragic.



....and yes, I am kidding, I think Donny knows nothing.

I can see the Lakers being in the mix, but I can't see them giving up Gasol for Rondo and Ray.  Chris Paul is a difference making PG, Rondo isn't and Ray is a backup on that team.  Now I could see some tweaks making that trade possible (and I think all 3 teams probably do this).

Celtics get Martin, Lowry, Barnes
Rockets get Gasol, Allen
Lakers get Rondo, Scola

Takes away most of the Celtic's cap space next summer, but still gets a promising young PG and a heck of a scorer and relatively young SG.  Barnes expires this year, but would be a great backup SF behind Pierce this year.

I think that gives the Celtics a similar shot at a title this year, but definitely improves the team going forward.

I'd rather have a C who can play more than 15 mpg, stay healthy, and actually rebounds.

Lopez regressed badly, I don't think he's better than a backup C. Gortat has far more value because he's a legitimate starting C, 1/3 the price for a backup C isn't a bargain.

RONDO For NASH..come on...how dumb is that. Rondo is a starter in any team, nash is now a helper, he was great, but at 37, you just can't defend the 20 yr olds....Why do the Celts always think they can just "get" someone, and never realize when they HAVE someone " Tony Allen..? "   Rondo is the guy to build around..you don't come across talent like that every day. He moves the ball very well....imagine or compare him to iverson...you want that..? a talent, who cannot play pg....some keep asking for more and more from rondo, look at the whole picture, it isn't RONDO that is the prob wth this team..he is "The Answer" to build around...now if DOC wll play the younger guys, you might go in the right / new diraction.

If Lowry/Martin was really as good as Rondo/Ray, I think the Rockets would have won a lot more games last year.  They are slightly above-average starters.  Rondo's a top 5 PG and Ray's a solidly above-average starter.

We get worse in the present and Rondo + cap space/cheaper Ray is better in the future too.

I think some guys don't want to play for the celts because they are always in the "get a patch " mode..trade all youth for a "maybe" vet....oh ya, just for one more year....you can't keep doing that..you look like a sell out, team loyalty, is a difficult concept, because it is a business, but only as a team will you win..chemstry also....

Actually what the Celtics get is screwed for overpaying for an end-of-the-road, no-D PG and a mediocre center in exchange for an all-star PG, defensive guard, solid backup PF and a 1st round pick in a loaded draft.

Did Lowry/Martin have Pierce, Garnett, etc. playing next to them?  Did they play in the Eastern Conference?  Houston was 43-39 in the West and not just the West but the Southwest where Houston was the last place team.  Every other division in basketball had at least 2 teams finish below .500.  

Also, Lowry is also improving by the minute and has significantly improved every year in the league.
