I know this is an unlikely scenario, but I'm wondering if it's possible: let's say a team like Utah (over the cap, under the tax) is very interested in Jeff Green for 2012.  Instead of waiting until the 2012 offseason to bid on him (when he'd be an RFA for Boston), they wait to see the outcome of his surgery in January, and then bring up a sign and trade scenario right around the trading deadline.  The idea being that a pro-rated portion of this season's salary would be worth the price of getting him ahead of free agency, (potentially)in addition to lowering  his annual price by giving him something this year.

Would this be allowable under the current CBA?
2025 Draft: Chicago Bulls

PG: Chauncey Billups/Deron Williams
SG: Kobe Bryant/Eric Gordon
SF: Jimmy Butler/Danny Granger/Danilo Gallinari
PF: Al Horford/Zion Williamson
C: Yao Ming/Pau Gasol/Tyson Chandler

Not if he can't pass a physical.

I believe teams receiving players in trade can waive a physical if they wish.  I'm pretty skeptical that another team would make this trade, but I think it's technically possible.

Great, thanks for the answer.  I agree that it's unlikely another team would want to make a trade like this.

But a GM with great affection for Jeff Green and some assurance of his future health might want to buy low in a quiet market.

I also think (hope) Stern would take advantage of his powers to veto trades.  If that happened, it would be horrible for the league, and would make the C's franchise looks completely heartless.

I love the C's, and want them to win the championship, but that is stretching the rules a little far for my liking.

To play Devil's Advocate, how would that be different than the Quis trade last year? This is more severe and publicized but can't be that different. If a losing team is in love with Green, wants his rights and wants to buy a building block for the future cheap, it could feasibly make sense to make a move.

Then again, I don't see it happening.

How is that stretching the rules if both teams agree and Jeff Green agrees to the contract?

Why is that any different than signing a player after he's had a serious injury? Its a pretty risky proposition (which is why I don't believe it'd happen) but I don't think its stretching things.

Huh?

How would it be heartless if the C's found him a team that wanted to pay him something for this year?

1. I can see his contract having value

2. I still have a question on whether he is signed to the $9MM number or the $4.5 MM number?

From reports, he's not signed to any number, as his $9 million contract was voided.

Not if he can't pass a physical.

Exactly.....Why would someone trade for a player that cant play or pass their physical?

If you want the rights to resign them after the season and think you can get him cheap (both in a trade & contract).

So, the Celtics retain his rights, with zero effect on payroll?

That's my understanding.

Then are the Celtics still over the luxury tax? If so, by how much? I'm not up to speed with what the new thresholds are.
