I know this is an unlikely scenario, but I'm wondering if it's possible: let's say a team like Utah (over the cap, under the tax) is very interested in Jeff Green for 2012. Instead of waiting until the 2012 offseason to bid on him (when he'd be an RFA for Boston), they wait to see the outcome of his surgery in January, and then bring up a sign and trade scenario right around the trading deadline. The idea being that a pro-rated portion of this season's salary would be worth the price of getting him ahead of free agency, (potentially)in addition to lowering his annual price by giving him something this year.
Would this be allowable under the current CBA?
