Basketball ramifications of the Jeff Green situation.

It's kind of ghoulish to be posting about a roster implications of Jeff Green's illness in a thread with posts of concern for the young man's like and health. It's also really harsh to post about how lousy the Perk trade turned out while also offering best wishes to a 25 year old athlete with a damaged heart.

So here's a thread about the basketball implications of the Green situation.  First off, there a huge hole in the Cs roster now.  With this compacted schedule, having a young 6th man who can play heavy minutes with starter quality play is essential.  Now the Celtics will have to either stretch out Pierce and Allen or play heavy minutes to a below average NBA player.

Yeah, basically our plan for this year (playing Green a lot to spell Pierce and Ray but also to play some "crazy" lineups thanks to his skills) has been thrown out of the window. Have to find a plan B, which is basically relying on Marquis being healthy all year and trying to find a scorer for the bench with only the minimum salary... mission impossible?

I'd like to see Boston sign two specialist wing players to play behind Marquis Daniels. A shooter and a defender. My choices would be Peja Stojakovic and Rodney Carney.

I'd also waive E.Moore and S.Pavlovic in order to free up the roster spots required to sign those players. Ensure that their is a spot available for the much needed third string center (Eric Dampier).

You still have JR Smith, Redd, and Posey out there. Hopefully we get the medical exception and are able to land Smith once his stint in China is over. Travis Outlaw too.

Another possibility is landing Kenyon Martin as well. Maybe, just maybe, if the NBA gives us the full 9M, we could split the prorated exception between the two.

For next season, it's safe to say that Green's value will have unfortunately shot down. Think Marquis this off-season and like Daniels we'll probably be able to sign for the vet minimum.

Kirilenko would be the perfect guy to replace Green. He's under contract in Russia but word is he's looking to leave to play for a contender. Would he be interested in the Celts? Just a thought.

However, that doesn't mean the Celtics now have $9 million to spend elsewhere.

Because the C's are well over the league salary cap of about $58 million, the only thing they can offer free agents is a veteran minimum contract.

And the market, as one NBA executive told CSNNE.com on Saturday, is "extremely thin."

Right, and David Stern would never veto the NO/LAL trade. Point is, you never know how the league, Stern, will view this.

+1. Maybe 6th seed even. And maybe first round out rather than a second. I am going into this season with no expectations though. I am really looking forward to when Danny starts blowing it up, which could be at the trading deadline this year. Then we will see if those who think he is a genius are right or those who think he is just okay (me) are right.

For the Celtics, it is still the same situation as prior to knowing about Green: the most important area where we need depth is still at the big man spot.

Assuming the NBA grants the Cs a Disabled Player Exemption of around $3.5m (half the QO for RFA Green), they should be able to get one of AK-47, K Mart or JR Smith for that on a one year deal, considering that there's almost no money left out there on NBA rosters for contending teams.

I'll take any one of them.  AK could be awesome here.  Him, KG and Rondo on the court at the same time is foreboding for the other team's offense.  

KMart, although I personally despise, plays with an edge that could be useful.  

JR Smith is a knucklehead, but has top of the league talent, and with KG, RA, and PP as mentors and Rondo as the conductor, could be 6th Man of the Year here.

Time for Ainge to make lemonade from this situation.
