Not only about Perkins being this ultimate-lock of not re-signing here. The case being was that Danny wanted to preserve our cap space for 2012 to make a run at free agents. However, the 2012 free agency class is getting weaker by the second. Paul won't likely be on it, and without us having Paul in place - any pipe dream of luring Howard here too is out the window. So then you're stuck with Deron Williams, at best, which as of now is a position we have filled. Not only that, who's to say we could not have re-signed Perkins similar to the deal that we were going to give David West ($9M-range) - while preserving one max slot for a potential good free agent?
Anyone who tries to spin the Perkins deal as "oh they just didnt want to lose Perkins for nothing in the off-season because they weren't going to re-sign him" is buying a company line from a franchise who knew they made a colossal mistake giving away a very good player for all but nothing, and throwing away a season where the team had a great chance at hanging #18. The logic behind the trade was, quite simply, getting a very good back-up wing after Daniels went down (failed big time as Green was underwhelming), and having Shaq come back healthy and get his starting role at center back (we know how that worked out.) The future was just a small part of it (and even that, the future is worse.) The trade was lost on every front. It was an absolute killer. Period. I'm actually getting very angry just typing this.
