They could have only two guys on their roster, Dirk and Marion and being as much as 23 million under the cap.

They are going to amnesty Haywood, and are currently trading Rudy and Brewer, I don't think they will pick up Beaubois/Jones options.

Which means they are a threat to Boston if Howard is a FA, and Deron is their primary target.

However Boston would have more capspace than the Mavs although by little, but barring any trades we would have young assets like Rondo,Bradley,Johnson and Paul Pierce with the possibility to resign KG and Allen.

Dallas wouldn't be able to build a good roster around Howard so to go play with Dirk and Marion is not as good as playing with Boston. I think Deron is a better fit with them.

If they could entertain Deron as much as possible and convince him to leave the Nets Howard is practically a lock to come to Boston.

Whats the story on whether the Nets can resign Deron? Last i heard the league was thinking of making it impossible for him to resign there as a punishment for the meeting in Miami between Prokorov his GM, and Howard and his camp. Werent there collusion charges?

Next year, he's only guaranteed $2.4 million.

Dwight Howard has said he only wants to end up on one of 4 teams:

Orlando
Dallas
LAL
Brooklyn / New Jersey

So it doesn't matter how much cap space the Celtics have in relation to other teams.  Unless those 4 teams are somehow all out of the running, Dwight is not coming here.

I'd love to see Dallas get a superstar next year.

Mark Cuban deserves it. Does a great job running his team.

I'm sure they'll pick up Beaubois and Jones options. Not entirely sure about Dominique Jones - I think they will, he's a nice young player - but Beuabois is a given.

We know that minds change.  His has changes a few times already.  But, I don't expect he'll come ot Boston.  to be honest, my hope is that he stays in Orlando.  This is the way it should be in my opinion.  After that, I'll be pleased with anywhere other than LA.

Re: Lamar -- what is the conventional wisdom for why LA made this move?   Is there a rationale other than it was a move to increase their chances for Howard?

Yeah, I think Dwight Howard's mind can be changed. He just needs to get to free agency so that Boston can make their pitch. It'll be a strong offer. One he'll give serious consideration too.

I don't think Boston are out of the race by any means. That will only happen if Dwight is traded to a team he wants to re-sign with.

RE: Lamar = sneaky Lakers are up to something devious with that trade exception. Doesn't appear to directly relate to Dwight Howard though. At least not Orlando. Maybe if it becomes a three team deal or something else. Lakers new trade exception most likely to bring in an additional piece to put alongside Howard + Kobe.
