Rumors are circulating that the Pacers will attempt to sign David West if or when the sign-and-trade to the Celtics falls through. The Pacers have the cap space to sign West outright and they would be the likely destination for West if the Celtics can't iron out the last few tricky details.
With news tonight that the Lakers are out of the running and that the Clippers are still unwilling to give up Eric Gordon. It leaves Boston as the only team remaining with a shot for Paul.
Now, we may attempt to acquire both Paul and West in a blockbuster deal.
But now that Green is officially signed on for another year the salaries don't work and the deal for New Orleans is less than what it was a week ago. It would look really bad for them and the NBA for NO to accept a lesser deal, and to have it pass through.
But maybe there is a solution. Lets say the Celtics talk to Indiana again about a three-way deal. If Indiana is willing to part with more of it's prospects and/or draft picks to send to New Orleans, we will back out of the David West sweepstakes and let the all-star power forward sign with the team.
This would give Indiana a squad comprised of all-stars Rajon Rondo, Danny Granger and David West. The improved package for New Orleans (which would receive some combination of Collison, Rush, George, Hibbert, Bradley, JJJ, Moore and Picks from Boston *Obviously not all of them*) can say, we got a good deal out of all of this.
This is really important though! Indiana, would only have a reason to do this if the Celtics can PROVE to them that they have a deal in place to bring David West to Boston. If Ainge can't do that, they may just press their luck, and hope the deal falls through so they can get West without a trade. But if they think the only way they can get West is through this 3-way deal, their incentive to make it work doubles.
The Celtics get their guy in Chris Paul and also keep Jeff Green and hold on to Jermaine O'neal. (They would need to give up some young players to balance the contracts.) The Hornets get an imrpoved deal from what they had a week ago. The Pacers get two all-stars in the deal to pair with Granger. The deal improves for everyone involved.
Let me know what you think.
