Sources say Lakers will instead trade Lamar Odom to Dallas into Mavericks' new trade exception

- Marc Stein on Twitter

What are they up to? Why would they do that? What's going on that we don't about?

Does that create a trade exception coming back to them?  I think so, right?

If the Lakers were to trade Odom and another $3 million in salary to the Mavs, they could potentially take Turkoglu in a D12 trade.

Maybe the reports that NJ was looking for a third team to trade for Dwight forced them to pull out of CP3 trade. They'll target Dwight now.

Hedo does have a 15% trade kicker.

Yeah, that doesn't make sense by itself.  Unless of course, they are taking back a lot of salary from the Magic.

And perhaps getting rid of an unhappy Odom if they were really worried about it.

Have to wonder if Boston, which has been in a holding pattern w/David West, will try to get back in and try and piece together a mega deal

Clippers are also a realistic possibility to make a play.

Yeah, but there is no reason to do it right away.  They made this trade right now for a reason, and it was not just to get Odom out of town.

Makes sense.. at this point I just want to get this West deal finalized.. West and Paul are good friends so it would def make BOS more attractive

EDIT:  Of course, if they're doing it that way, wouldn't it make more sense to include Odom to the Magic for Turk, and then have the Magic trade Odom to Dallas?  That would free things up with matching salary requirements, etc.

Yeah, that's my thinking too.

Or it could be Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum that go to Orlando. Especially if Chicago goes forward and offers Noah and Boozer. A trade which would also give LAL lots of room to take back bad salaries.

It sounds more like they have something else up their sleeve and must be very good because Odom is a steal at the price he's paid.

Three tweets from Wojo:

1)
The three-way deal to send Chris Paul to the Lakers has "fallen apart," league source involved in talks says.

2)
ESPN.com is reporting that the Lakers have pulled out of the trade, which a source in the talks confirms.

3)
Lakers and Hornets won't pursue a direct deal for Chris Paul either, source says. "L.A. can't give them what they need," source says.

Note that the ESPN story says LA is now trading Odom to Dallas.

Lakers have pulled out.

WHy ? I think the clever Edited for profanity.  Please do not do it again.s are going to throw the heavier package at Howard and then come back for Paul.

Well, the other issue is that Dallas will likely have to give up some assets for Odom.  Picks, young players, etc.  And these could then be part of the deal for Howard.

Make no doubt about it, they are going to go after Howard, however, i think this smells of Stern quietly nixing this deal since they apparently can't come up with enough. The rumors of the new trade proposals were essentially no different than the deal that was killed.
