Sources say Brandon Roy to announce medical retirement due to degenerative knees, possibly as soon as today

I'm surprised nobody posted this yet, if this is true it's very sad.

Someone with his level of talent having to retire at such a young age is just awful. Even though everyone was talking about how bad it was I never expected him to retire.

Very sad, I'm sorry that the red flags on him turned out to be right. For a few years he looked to be the next great SG in the NBA.

Very sad for Portland and Brandon.  (Portland is one of the leagues unluckiest franchises).

I hope he made some wise investments

Sad...very sad.

I just remember like yesterday how people were saying "The Blazers are going to be contenders for a long time".

Look at them now.

We really were fortunate that we were able to have these last few years of the Big 3, even if we also experienced some bad luck with injuries.

We were very lucky it all worked out for us in '08.

Wow. Sorry to hear.

Guess Ican't criticize Danny any longer for not taking him in the draft that year.

At least he qualifies for some NBA pension. And at least in 2009-10 he signed a 4 year max contract.

I'll miss him

This week just keeps getting weirder .. that's tough for Roy.
Stay classy, San Diego. Hello, Baxter? Baxter, is that you? Bark twice if you're in Milwaukee. Is this Wilt Chamberlain? Have the decency to say something.

That's shocking. You'd expect Roy to try for a few years before giving up.

Yeah so at least he's gonna have some money. The sad part to me is that he's now never going to know what could have been if his knees held up. His career was just cut too short and now he'll wonder how good he could have been. I feel bad for both the Blazers and Roy.

Man, Greg Oden is cursed.

Also, it sounds like it's not 100% yet but the most likely scenario.

Good luck to Brandon Roy in his future endeavors. At least he shone one last time in last year's playoffs with that incredible...just inspiring performance. He loves the game and you know it.

I wonder if he didn't want to be anmenstied.

Either that or his ego/pysche couldn't take being reduced to a role player. Its a crushing thing for an athletes body to betray them when they are still young. (my fiance had it happen at age 20 with her ankles)

From what I heard and read about the guy and his competitiveness...it must be that bad...

He was fun to watch and that one 4th quarter outburst he had last year will be his last hurrah I guess...

I wonder if it isn't the knees that's preventing him from trying, but his spirit.

He may be just too down to be motivated to try.

I feel like he did try? There was talk last season and possibly that before of him playing through incredible pain and "grinding" sensations..

That said, real shame. Great player and people I know who know the guy say he's a really great person.
