To put it sharper terms, Kings are cap-room team that has offered Hayes mid-level type cash ($20 mil over four) and optimistic he'll accept

That's a lot of cash for Hayes, what are the Kings thinking?

Overpaid and a horrible fit for that team. Lousy signing.

I guess not. Wow, the new CBA is sure working well isn't it? First Paul and Howard are demanding trades AND precisely which city to be traded to, and now the GMs of non contending teams are throwing money at udersized mediocre players. Yea, the lockout sure accomplished a lot in terms of system issues  ::)

I think that's one way to look at it.
A different way to look at it is that bench big men now command MLE-type money, and that is pretty much going to be the going rate for BBD as well (or any other decent big man back up the Cs might like to sign, like Jeff Foster, Kurt Thomas, etc).

They should have called us if they wanted an undersized center (BBD).

If you just look at him as a basketball player instead of fitting him into a position for his height, the money makes more sense.  In starter minutes, he'd give you a double double, with 4 assists, a steal and a block every night.  Not sure how well he'll work opposite cousins though.

Stupid.

It's one thing if they offered him the whole MLE for one year.  I don't know why 4 years.  Are they bidding against themselves like Danny did with Scal a number of years ago?

The players were right, the owners are pretty stupid and even with new rules, they still can't keep themselves from making dumb moves.

Can't wait to see them waive him with the stretch.

Hayes is like the anti-BBD tho.  He's a beast on the glass, gets good steals and blocks, and is used to only getting trash buckets (ie rarely forcing shots).  He's undersized, but he doesnt play like it.  If a guy put up his same numbers, but was 5 inches taller, this would be considered a steal...that doesnt make sense to me.  I'm not saying this is a good signing...I just think it's a bit more reasonable than you guys seem to think.

yup.  if chuck hayes can get the full mle no reason baby can't.  heck, since baby can actually score he should get 7 or 8 million a year by that measure.

the only conclusion i can come to is that the kings have to take on a good amount of salary to make sure they are at the minimum salary cap, which was raised in the new cba.  they were barely at the minimum in the prior CBA when it was a good deal lower.  still doesn't make much sense overpaying for a role player as limited as chuck hayes, though.
