So much for the lockout being a return to fiscal sanity.  Wasn't it meant to protect teams precisely like Sacramento?

I love me some Chuck Hayes, but $20 million is too much for a defensive role player.

What is Sacramento trying to accomplish?  What is their team goal.  The seem all over the place with the player moves.

The only reason I can see Sac giving Chuck this money is because they are so far under the cap they need to hit the minimum salary spent  ;)

I think Hayes is worth the full MLE to a contender with the right frontcourt complement (someone with length and offensive skill).  Don't think the trainwrecks that are the Kings roster and Demarcus Cousins qualify.

My immediate reaction was the same as most here.

But then I thought:

1. Sacramento is going to lose Dalembert
2. Sacramento has to overpay to sign a free agent
3. With youngsters Cousins, Hickson, and Thompson, they need a hard-nosed, blue-collar vet to bolster the frontcourt rotation

So I can kind of see some logic behind the signing.

I don't see a huge problem with the $5 mil a year, I'm more skeptical at the whole 4 year thing.

Why is it being called the MLE?  Isn't Sacramento way under the cap?  Hoopshype has them at only having 29M committed for next season so far.

If you read the intial quote in the OP, you'll see it isn't actually an MLE contract, rather an MLE-type contract.  Money is essentially the same though.

The thread title is a bit misleading though.   ;D

That's what got teams like Milwaukee in trouble, overpaying for role players.  I'm hoping this will make other teams laugh and not be the salary that becomes the standard for all signings.  If it is it means the C's are going to sign someone with 60% the talent of Chuck Hayes.  Ugh.

  • Ainge *still* has a Posse! Ubuntu Y'all

the only conclusion i can come to is that the kings have to take on a good amount of salary to make sure they are at the minimum salary cap, which was raised in the new cba.  they were barely at the minimum in the prior CBA when it was a good deal lower.  still doesn't make much sense overpaying for a role player as limited as chuck hayes, though.

I think this is exactly the reason they signed Hayes to this type of money -- they actually HAVE to to meet the min. salary requirements in the new CBA.

That said $5M/ year for 4 years isn't that bad for the Kings for a guy like Hayes IMO.

First, as someone else mentioned he'll bring some veteran grit to a very young frontline.

Second, contending teams (who ostensibly are more likely to take on a questionable contract) will, or should, always be lookign for team-first, solid rebounding guys like Hayes. I see him as cut from the same cloth as guys like PJ Brown, Robert Horry, etc. Guys who will do the little things that help teams win titles.

In 2 years Hayes' contract will be $10M/2 years and the Kings, if need be, can easily move that.

That's what got teams like Milwaukee in trouble, overpaying for role players.

Milwaukee got into trouble because they thought they were close to being a contender rather than realizing that they overachieved.

Sounds like this report is a bit premature.

Jerry Zgoda says that Minnesota is also in the running for Hayes' services, with Houston also asking Hayes to wait on his decision.
