Rajon career highs were 32 points and 24 assists.

Could have, would have but the law of averages says that neither of these guys get twenty assists except on a rare night.   Paul might get more assists with our shooters but I think his points would go down.   However, he has the ability to extend the defense and keep them honest which Rondo does not.

Is CP3 still the same guy with the knee issues though?   That is my primary worry.   I willingly concede he is overall the better player.  But if he is not the same guy I worry.  Thorough physical is the key.

He averaged 15.8 PPG and 9.9 assists per game last year.  His career highs are 42 points and 21 assists.  While it is conceivable given that he could drop 30/20 these stats show that comment is largely hyperbole.

Rondo could drop 30 assists maybe 40 assists, but I have not so much confidence he would ever drop 40 points if his life or team depended on it.

If Rondo would increase his FT% to 85, and made a large number of layups, it's possible he could score 40 points, but highly unlikely.

CP3 is a legit superstar who is capable of bring his game to a godly level.

For a little perspective, people have been raving about Paul's performance against the Lakers as a sign of what he's capable of. He averaged about 22/7/12 against them, Rondo averaged 19/7/12 against the Knicks and he averaged 21/6/12 against the Cavs the year before.

Wow... somehow CP3 has become god... The guy averaged 15 points as the number 1 scoring option on his team.  Rondo shot the same percent from the field and got 10 points as the 4th option.  Is CP3 a better scorer than Rondo yes by about 5 extra points every game.  Rondo has more assists so that makes it about 2.5 extra points per game.  Rondo probably gets a little more back by his defense.  Rondo has more turnovers so that will mean less points.  But adjusted for pace which inflates Pauls stats a little, the difference is negligible.  So overall Chris Paul will get you a couple extra points... for an extra 7-9 Million in cap space.
Also the way the teams play defense on Rondo, they prevent the drive to the basket.  They sag off him and actually make it more difficult for him to get assists by 5 on 4 on the defense.  That's why Rondo doesn't attack as much as people think and have as many turnovers.  CP3 is mostly double teamed which means he has a wide open David West, Trevor Ariza, or Okafor for assists.  Rondo has to work hard to create his assists because it's much more difficult for someone to get open when the defense is playing 5 on 4.  Chris Paul has to work harder for his points but gets easier assists.
Even Hall of Famers score poorly with an extra defender while wide open "role players" can be very efficient.

I don't want to get drawn too far into this argument, but I will say that the performance against the Lakers was not impressive because of the numbers, it was impressive because he completely carried a pretty terrible team on his back in spectacular fashion.

Numbers aside, not many players in the history of the game can do what Paul can do, when he is at his best.

He carried his team to 2 wins in 6 games against a team that lost something like 5 of 7 heading into the playoffs and got swept in the next round. Not many players in the history of the league can do what Rondo did against the Cavs last year either.

Adrian Wojnarowski is tweeting that the Clippers/Warriors/Celtics are heavily involved in talking to New Orleans about Chris Paul supposed to be a story soon.

Not sure if he means some sort of three way mega trade or what at this point. These rumors are going to keep happening as it appears New Orleans is going to bite the bullet and try to move on before the start of the season.

Like Rondo, but he needs to look in the mirror and eliminate he's weaknesses (FT's and a jumper)in order for a team to consider him a building block. If he takes it personally so bit it make it will be a wake up call for him to improve.  look at someone like Avery Johnson he was awful his first few seasons but later on had a reliable jumper.  It can be done if the work is put it especially free throws.  Any middle schooler could shoot a better percentage than Rondo...

BballTim, are you comfortable going forward after this year with Rajon Rondo as our best player?

Wouldn't you rather have the chance to build around CP3?
