I hope it doesn't come to that.

I heard they'd figure out the winning percentages for the past 3 years, then rank them with EVERY team having a chance for the #1 overall.

that's how the NHL did it.

I agree with the every team part and can go either way on past 3 or 5 years. Of course, you would think that last year should count more than 5 years ago. Look at how much OKC has turned around in that time. Great news for Knicks. Not good news for Cleveland.

if the nba follows some variation of the article, the celtics will have a pretty poor draft position. but that would have happened anyway given that the celtics would have finished near to the top record once again. so i would not be overly disappointed should this occur.

now if they factor in the past FIVE years, then the celtics would benefit and certainly would move up a few slots.

given the nba's willingness to create an elaborate and nearly byzantine lottery system so far, i would expect a complex system that takes into account a wide range of factors and weights them according to a formula.

some factors might be...

- past 3 to 5 year win/loss records for each team
- weight the last 3/5 years with the most recent year being favored/weighted more
- weight the win loss record by opponents' win loss records
- bring in playoff records as one factor, the deeper a team went in the playoffs the less preference they receive
- distinguish between past drafting positions, perhaps weight whether a team was "lucky" and moved up in the draft as opposed to simply being bad enough to "earn" their draft position
- make a distinction between lottery/non lottery teams in weighting
- take into account personal changes during the lock out, i.e. retirements, free agents, departures to europe, etc.
- small market versus big market teams so as to balance free agent movement

i am sure other factors will come into play, but those are probably some of the major ones.

but then again, what if team rosters are dramatically affected? say by all/many setting players free from previous contracts to maximize free agency? that is, reset the league by setting players free, then run the lottery strictly 100% based upon luck.

the last scenario is unlikely, but some form of it may occur.

thus, once again no one, not even stern, really knows what will happen over the next year or so.

Well, whatever happens with the draft, I'm very excited to see what we do with not only our regular pick, but that no. 12 pick from the Clips.

The last time Boston drafted someone in that vicinity....we picked some guy named Paul Pierce, at 10. :)

I think Paul did alright, myself. And this draft looks to be a LOT deeper.

I'm excited - not only for the draft, but the upcoming season.

I have to say, I am not thrilled with many of the options for the C's right now.

If the season is lost, they could be really hurt by however they sort out the draft.

If the deal is approved next week, they would likely be looking at a compressed 72 game schedule (kill the old legs), with only a mini-MLE and no sign and trades to improve the team.

Not a great choice for the C's.

A lot will depend on how they define "luxury tax payer".  Right now, our payroll is below the luxury tax, but a full MLE deal would push us over the line.  Does that mean we can use the MLE, or we can't?  (The union says yes, the owners say no, as of the last report).

Not that it's going to matter a whole lot, I guess, because I can only see us giving out a one year deal with the MLE.

One of my better, cheaper, younger guys is playing overseas with no out clause (Wilson Chandler), half my roster is over the hill (Garnett, Pierce, Nash, Kirilenko), one of my guys retired (Yao Ming), another player (Jarrett Jack) is suspended for the first game of the season (whenever that is).  I say give it to me.  This lockout has not been good to me.   ;D

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

Yeah, I didn't want to get into the nitty gritty about that.  I think the key on that is whether they count cap holds (and qualifying offers) into the calculation as well as contracts already on the books.  My guess is they will.

But the C's also could have the opportunity to get below the tax line by using the Amnesty clause on Jermaine Oneal...but that might be a tough blow as well.

Either way, just not a ton of positives from the C's side right now.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
One of my biggest worries with the lockout was what would happen to the clips pick. If the lockout continues and we miss the season we almost definitely lose our chance at the pick which is top 10 protected I believe. I'd hate to see this team miss out on a potential lotto pick in a deep draft when we are about to head into a rebuild mode.

if they give every team some chance at the top pick then Doc best get ready to see Austin playing for the Knicks.
