For Christmas I got my girlfriend a refurbed Dyson Ball vacuum.  Got myself a pretty slick deal.  They retail new for around 450, usually sell refurbed for 350 and I got it for 240.

My question is I can get a 2 year warranty from overstock.com for 35.99.  Do you guys think it is worth it?  If it was just for me I probably wouldnt bother, but since its a refurb and a gift I think I am leaning towards getting it.

any advice?

I think a warranty is a good idea on a refurbished item.

Shop around on the warranty, though, particularly at squaretrade.com.  You can usually find coupons to reduce their costs, too:

No idea if the warranty will be cheaper, but Square Trade is probably the best warranty company in the business, from everything I've heard.

If you use the coupon code FF30, you can get a one year warranty for $7.99, if you want to meet in the middle, or two years for $26.99.

haha tried it already, it applies the coupon but wont let you check out with it.  says that i cannot be applied to this type of item.

I think the best deal I could get on a 2 year warranty through squaretrade was 40.58 using a 30% off coupon code.  But.  The squaretrade warranty kicks in after the 6 month overstock warranty finishes, the overstock 2 year warranty starts at date of purchase.  So really im getting an extra 6 months with squaretrade.

Well, in the grand scheme of life, $4 for an extra 6 months of piece of mind probably isn't the worst thing in the world.  Just read through the two of them, and make sure they're protecting the same things, etc.

Check here to read about some other people's experience with Overstock:

I personally have never had an issue with them, but it sounds like if there *is* a problem, it's going to be a hassle.  I'd buy the warranty from the company with the better reputation.

Back up for a second, dude.

"For Christmas I got my girlfriend a refurbed Dyson Ball vacuum."

Am I the only one who sees a *major* problem with this statement?  You buying her an ironing board as well?

Haha I know it doesnt sound that great, but she has been fawning over the dyson ball vacuums for the past 2 years, and our current vacuum is pretty terrible.

Actually the other day, she asked me what I wanted for christmas and I said I dunno, and she was like, well don't you want to know what I want?  and I said, "I already ordered your present, it just hasnt come yet." and completely unprompted she says, "Is it a dyson!?!"

So I know it sounds kinda bad, but she really wants it!

I have a squaretrade warranty.  I can't really comment on the service of them doing repairs since nothing has gone wrong, *knocks on wood* but their prices are great compared to most places.

Some refurbished items come with a full warranty.  Make sure you check before you buy, if not, I would consider it.   But generally the ones I have bought from Dell came with a full warranty.

Dyson new vacuums come with a 5 year dyson warranty, the refurbs come with a 6 month dyson warranty.  I figure if they refurb them though the odds of something going wrong in 6 months is pretty low, but something going wrong in the first 2.5 years is possible.

I only buy warranties on items that cost $500 or more because I've found that if they are going to break it is usually right away or years after the fact.

Haha. One year, the first year my wife and I had an apartment together, I gave her (among 5-6 other things), an inexpensive skillet for her birthday. Of course it offended her, and was the only gift that she got that she ever mentioned (to me *and* to others). The kicker? It wasn't even for her to use. I was a cook at the time and bought it so *I* could make her omelets for breakfast/brunch as we didn't have a pan that would do that well. I've never lived that one down...

See, that should totally let you off the hook.  Not that logical, well-reasoned arguments always work so well in battles of the sexes.
