I guess I would prefer a historic draft, mostly because it allows me to relive a lot of great memories of teams and players of yesteryear.  However, if present-day is the only way to get some guys to play, I'm cool with that.

There's always the option of having those who are less historically-inclined just draft exclusively present-day rosters.  I think today's players hold up well when compared to their predecessors.

Another issue is injuries, with the big one being Peyton Manning.

I am more interested right now in a the current NFL as a draft.

As for injuries, I would say ignore them for this draft in terms of being able to play.  They occur much more then in the NBA and makes this harder.

If we do historical, I would say keep it a shorter time period.  Say from 2000 through 2010.

I'll propose this.  1990-forward.  Still get guys like Montana, Marino, and Elway in there while not going too far back.

Not sure how many posters we have born in the nineties but I think its a decent enough window to have knowledge on while not being overbearing.

In regards to injuries, I agree with Wdleehi and say they should be ignored.

Don't all sign up at once... ;)

Seriously, I think this would be fun, if anybody wants to get it a shot as we wait for a season.

From an outsider's stand point:

Football's history is a lot less storied, which could make it that much more difficult to compare.

Less storied?  The NFL has been around longer than the NBA.
Far far longer.

I've had a drunk Cowboys fan taunt me (in my Bears Jersey) about only winning one title once. I started laughing and upon saying they've won 9 to him I discovered that if a title doesn't have a roman numeral associated with it apparently it doesn't count  ::).

Just to clarify I meant "storied" as in "acclaimed" or "discussed." I'd guess that your average person knows significantly less about football's past compared to other sports. I'd see it as next to impossible to have a draft with enough people and be able to compare the impact a lineman of the 50's, 60's, and 70's would have against a modern defensive lineman.

I'd guess your average 20-30 year old football fan could only name a hand full of players (besides qb) that played in the league pre 1980

Fran tarkanton, art Donovan, gene upshaw, Terry Bradford, bob costas, Paul walker, Burt Reynolds, Mario Cantone, James Caan, David boreanaz, um...yeah that's all the football players I know pre-1980.
