Per PFT via a report out of Indy:

Quote
On Sunday, John Michael Vincent of ESPN 1070 in Indianapolis reported that Colts quarterback Peyton Manning needs another surgical procedure on his neck.  Though the team kind-of/sort-of indirectly denied it, JMV was at least in the right church (even if occupying the wrong pew), given the flurry of reports and developments that followed JMV’s information.

Now, another Indianapolis radio host is upping the ante.

Jake Query of WNDE, citing two unnamed sources whom he trusts, reports that Manning already has had another procedure on his neck, and that he’ll miss the entire 2011 season.

Manning’s status remains cloaked in mystery, in part because the team is likely sharing the bare minimum — and in part because the condition from which he suffers involves complex neurological issues that can’t be addressed by taking two aspirin or “wanting it.”  But with afternoon drive-time host in Manning’s home market reporting that Manning’s condition is far more serious than currently believed, it’s not too early to at least consider whether we’ll see Manning play at all in 2011.

Or 2012.  Or ever.

Take it with a grain of salt but certainly a bit eye-opening.

Wow,
That's really a bummer for that team, especially given they just signed him for such a big deal.

Hopefully this isn't true.  A healthy Manning makes the league better.

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Peyton Manning underwent a third surgery on his injured neck Thursday morning, FOXSports.com's Jay Glazer has confirmed.

Manning underwent surgery to fuse the C-2 and C-3 vertebrae in his neck, and is expected to miss at least two to three months.

Ouch!  See guys, it's not just Celtic players...they've been saying Manning would be ready for Week 1 the entire off-season, now days beforehand they say he wont be ready for months.

I'm going out on a limb here:

This is his third neck surgery in 18 months. He won't be back in 3 months.

Ouch.  I feel bad for the Colts fanbase...that's very Kevin Garnett in 09-ish

Yeah, sadly for the Colts, I think he's likely out for the season.

It sure looks that way.  Let's say he's ready in 3 months.  That's going to be Week 12 or 13, and the Colts are likely to be so far out of contention that, even if fully healthy, it makes no sense to bring Manning back.

Stuff like this sucks for the league.

This would be a blow to the competitiveness and excitement of the NFL as a whole, and I hope it's not true. He's the guy many of us love to hate, (in a sports fan sort of way), and I wouldn't wish this on my least favorite player, but especially a guy that brings so much energy, action and excellence to the game of football.

That collective groan you just heard was from fantasy football owners across the country who now have to scramble at the QB position.

True that.  Luckily, I like my backup.

(But seriously, Yahoo, update your "Can't Cut" list.)

If I were a Colts fan, I'd be thinking that there are 2 possible best case scenarios (neither likely):

1. Manning is ready to play in Week 12 after Colts have managed to eek out a 5-5 rcord.  This would leave them very much in contention for a playoff berth.

2. They are so bad that they shelve Manning for the season regardless of his ability to come back, and they position themselves for Andrew Luck in the draft.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnnnnnndddddddd the record holds

btw, I wasn't wishing injury on manning out of my man-crush on #4. But I'm not going to lie, I'm happy that his record is a bit safer. I would have rather seen Manning retire before getting hurt.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

Wonder if Jim Caldwell coach the Colts to an 11-5 record at the of this year if Manning is out all year, like Belichick did when Brady was out all year in 2008?

I just hope he can come back at some point and we haven't seen the last of Peyton Manning.

I hate to be morbid, but I'd say that the odds that Peyton Manning's played his last down are much higher than the odds of him returning this season.

Sad.

Truly a guy you love to hate, I often found myself more excited about upcoming Colts games than early playoff rounds.
