My impression of mainstream was the Bud/Coors/Miller class and lower.  So stuff like National Bohemian (Natty Bo), Genesee Light, and Golden Anniversary fits, as well as all the megabrew stuff.

If we're including the nicer stuff like Sam Adams and Heineken, what about their specialty lines?  Could something like Sam Adams Millenium or Sierra Nevada Torpedo count, or are we just restricted to their main staple varieties?

This is just me, but here goes:

'Mainstream Beers':

1) Entire Coors/Miller family
-Coors, Miller, Molson, Milwaukee's best
2) Entire Bud family
-Buds, Labatts, Busch, -Pabst
3) Guinness Stout, Smithwicks, Harp, Bass
4) Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
5) Yuengling Amber Ale
6) Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams Cherry Wheat (literally, this is freakin everywhere)
-I would cut it off after just Boston Lager, or maybe Cherry Wheat too, because being from NY, more than the above isn't at the local gas stations.
7) 'fruity but prevelent beers' (Blue Moon, Shocktop, etc)
8) Dos Equis, Corona
9) Heineken

I don't know..there are probably lots others.

Nothing terribly important but I do not know if I would agree that Yeungling is "mainstream"...despite being the oldest brewery in America it is hard to find in a large part of the U.S..  When I lived in PA and would visit friends in Ohio I had to bring some for them because they could not get it and it is just now starting to show up in some places in Chicago.

I've heard that. I've also heard that Fat Tire is like the Yuengling of the Mid-West.

Only the #9.

What about Longtrail? Seems like you can get the Longtrail Pale Ale and the Blackberry Wheat pretty much everywhere in NY.

Did a little Googling and it looks like Yuengling is the 4th biggest brewery in America, after Anheuser-Busch, MillerCoors, and Pabst.  Boston Brewing (Sam Adams) is 5th.  I think they qualify.

I guess it is the word "mainstream" that I have issue with in regards to Yuengling...I find it hard to label something "mainstream" if you cannot find it in one of the largest cities in the country or entire states. Now I am curious as to what percentage of Yuengling is consumed in Pennsylvania.  All that being said, I have no issue labeling it "mainstream" for our purposes and can promise you it won't be one of my draught choices...

Me either, not a fan. If I wanted to buy non-hopped non-flavorful garbage, I'll save myself the 50 cents and buy a coors.

I think I got a solution here:

6 beers. No mainstream vs non-mainstream constraints. Just 6 beers.

Save us a lot of debate

I am so far behind on this right now.

Can we get a separate post with the rules/specifications/etc?

I like the "can be found nationwide in most convenience / grocery stores" definition of mainstream.  It excludes stuff strictly based on brewery (i.e., Sam Utopias), and it also excludes some of the imported beers that you only see in liquor stores or very occasionally on tap (like Chimay).

And hey, what's a draft on CB without some controversy?  Bring out the "Pub Experience" veto power!

Boo!!! ;)

I liked the mainstream category.  Sometimes people just want a cheap beer, and this requires people to weigh those options.  You learn more about someone's beer tastes in the PBR vs. Beast debate than you do in weighing two beers that nobody outside of southwest Arkansas has ever heard of.
