Bill Russell wasn't filling the stat sheet with points. Never averaged over 20 ppg... but he has 5 MVPs
But he was averaging 16-18 PPG, over 20 rebounds per game, was the best defensive player in the league and it wasn't close and Boston beat writers used to count his blocked shots because they weren't an official stat and some claim he was averaging over 10 blocks a game. Almost no one in the league has ever tried to say that that claim is invalid.

If Rondo could average 15 PPG, dish out 15 assists per game and average 10 steals a game without being a good shooter or making 60% on his FTs, I am sure he would be MVP, but that's not going to happen.

I don't think he'll get there but 15 and 15 would give him a good shot at the MVP without the 10 steals a game (but with his usual defense).

In Russell's day the players determined the MVP.

From the wiki of NBA MVP:
Quote
Until the 1979–80 NBA season, the MVP was originally selected by a vote of NBA players

Thanks for that info
See thats why, today's NBA is a popularity contest amongst the media. I know Rondo is exciting, but he plays awkward. His type of style doesn't make him a media darling

I don't agree with this for the most part.
I think Rondo is definitely a media darling- particularly after he broke his arm in the playoffs-they put him up on a pedestal and will do so for a while.
His flashy plays are why people love watching the Celtics.

Rondos flashiness combined with the hard work of both KG and Ray Allen playing way younger than their real age, sprinkled in with Paul Pierce is what basketball fans love.
Our team is the perfect mix of hard work and a little bit of showmanship.
Rondo got picked 2nd behind Rose by NBA fans all over the world. I think that speaks mountains to his appeal and his exciting style- as good a defender as he is he sure wasn't picked for his defensive or leadership abilities.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

I think it's possible for the Rondo to win the MVP if certain circumstances occur: Celtics finish with the best record in the NBA, by a substantial margin over whoever is in second. Secondly if Rondo actually hit his got [dang] free throws and averaged either something like 12ppg, 15apg or 17ppg, 12apg

Become Legendary.

I think 15 ppg, 13 apg, and 3+ spg, over 50% from the field, and at least 65% from the stripe, coupled with a top 3 regular season team record would put him squarely in contention.

Those numbers aren't too likely, but they are possible.
DKC Seventy-Sixers:

PG: G. Hill/D. Schroder
SG: C. Lee/B. Hield/T. Luwawu
SF:  Giannis/J. Lamb/M. Kuzminskas
PF:  E. Ilyasova/J. Jerebko/R. Christmas
C:    N. Vucevic/K. Olynyk/E. Davis/C. Jefferson

At the very least he'd need something like 18 points, 14 assists, 5 boards, 2 steals, and +50% shooting.

Plus the best record.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

You know, I can agree with that TP
I just feel like the reason Lebron gets back to back MVPs while Dywane Wade gets none is because Lebron is an athletic freak with supreme one on one skills (compares to why media is more in favor of Rose than Rondo)
I think Wade should have gotten at least one MVP. He's a proven winner, leader, more consistent, etc... But its that superficial media that won't vote for him

  • Rondo = Good
Rondo would have to hit 75% of his free throw and break the assist record, while leading the Celtics to a top 3 record.

So yeah.  Not happening.

  • I love the Celtics
It's very much possible, if he leads the Celtics to the best record. Stays healthy and plays like he capable of..... Then yes he could be MVP!!!!
