Talking about trading, Red said trades had to be made and were part of the job, however, loyalty to established stars was paramount:

"...And we never traded a guy at the tail end of his career , when he had started to slip.  I'd never have dreamed of taking, say, Bob Cousy, knowing he was going to retire at 34, and trading him to New York for a first round pick when he turned 35.  No way."          taken from On & Off The Court

Ainge needs to listen to this.  His 'everybody is on the block all the time' approach is a recipe for failure and for lack of team cohesion.

While there is certainly wisdom in that, lets also remember that the system was different when Red was running things.  We will see what happens with the new CBA, but trades under the last CBA had taken on a completely different importance than they had, maybe 20 years ago, because of the cap restrictions, size of the league, etc.

Not sure I follow this, since that "approach" was what brought them from the second (or was it third?) worst record in the league to the world champions, in 1 year.

Just saying that I agree that loyalty is certainly important, but the league is very different than it was when he was here.

While he may not have ever made a trade like that with Cousy, I think there is a chance the different landscape of the NBA could make him change that stance, if he were asked now.

I think "piffle",  ;) .  Red was building continuity and history, and developing a wealth of good will to bring future stars to Boston.  He was also developing a wealth of basketball knowledge, an encyclopedia, so to speak, of HOF players who, to this day, consider themselves family.  They still lend their knowledge and loyalty whenever it is needed.  We almost lost that under Pitino.

Oh, I agree completely.  I am just saying that I think with any wisdom being spoken from a different time, it can't always be taken too literally when determining how to learn from it.

I am of the opinion that if a player's attitude or performance defines a ballclub he should never be traded. Paul pierce is a great example of that and I believe rondo will take that mantle when pierce retires. Not to compare them as players or people, but I see a great Celtic in rondo.

how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck was chris bosh?

I don't see any Celtics GM ever trading Pierce regardless of the situation.

I see anybody else on the roster being tradable for what Danny and Wyc would be the right price.

Agree that  Rondo is a must keep, the MVP of this team and by far the best player we have.  But I doubt anybody including Rondo would be off the table.....Except Pierce.

Pierce is a legacy piece....Virtually untradable.

yup, and I think Danny is absolutely into this after all he manage to keep pierce and make him his champion team capitan. finally I really hope Rondo stays here too.

p.s. PP is the mark of Danny succes so I dont think hes ever going to go anywhere

And for PP I am sure from time to time he will accept his role  as a Seasoned vet... maybe in two years or so and stays with a contract that allows him to retire with that nice Celtics Jersey

A lot of the players were smokers themselves.
