"Do We Really Want Dwight Howard?"

Wow....now I've read it all.

Why wouldn't we want the best center in all the NBA??!!

People, the Celtics stunk in the playoffs this year.

We need MORE talent.

The Celtics stunk in the playoffs?

You didn't happen to see what happened to Dwight Howard's team in this year's playoffs did you? Sure Howard was phenomenal but the rest of that Orlando team was pitiful as was the team as a whole, even with Howard's performance.

Some of you guys are off.  Howard wouldn't come here to fit in.  He'd come here to dominate.  IMO, Howard is the most impactful player in the game bar none.

You get the center piece and then worry about filling in the rest.

All that said, he ain't coming here.  No chance.

Agree, we need more talent.
The issue is what we have to give up in order to get Dwight.
It is not as simple as "we add Dwight".  There are tradeoffs, and the more interesting question (IMO) is what are those tradeoffs and can we live with them?  Without knowing the structure of the new CBA, it is hard to even speculate at this.
Celtics fan for life.

These hypothetical questions can be misleading because you could say DH as compared to what (any other player in the league)? Or DH in exchange for what?

I will take the question to mean do we really want to go "all in" and get DH? My answer is no.  I share the "clown" concerns.  I don't think he will be "the guy" and in the future, it is probably going to be harder to put talent around your one big gun.  Look how much money Orlando has spent over the years trying to put a team around him.

Now of course he could be an awesome Robin to some other Batman or there are other scenarios where he would be great but if you are going to build around Rondo and DH, I think you will be disappointed.

It's fair to say you don't want Howard in the same way that it's fair to not want Lebron James on the Celtics.  Just so long as you admit that Howard is by far the best center and quite possibly the best player currently in the NBA, certainly among the top handful.

Boston fans will probably be ambivalent about Dwight Howard as a Celtic because there is a good chance he will put up MVP-caliber seasons while at the same time appearing to under-achieve.  Every failure will be laid at his feet out of a belief that he should be better.  If you get tired of people on this board harping on Rondo's lack of a jump shot while failing to appreciate that he does so many other things so well that he is a legitimate All-Star point guard, that's nothing compared to what people will say about Dwight Howard.

I am sticking to my opinion that someone like a Marc Gasol would be better in Boston than Dwight Howard because Howard's elbows, which are allowed to work freely now would become lethal weapons worthy of suspension if used while on the Celtics.  I feel that his coaches and the refs have done him no favors by allowing him to freely elbow oponents, to the point of drawing blood, and not doing anything to stop it.  It is now ingrained in him that this is OK.

Meanwhile, Marc Gasol is a big man who is improving each year (IMO will be the better player of the Gasol brothers).  He has not yet reached the salary level of Howard.  He appears to be very coachable.  He doesn't stand at the three point line and chuck them up (huge plus in my book), but will play under the basket...more of a throw back center.

Did I mention that his is BIG?  (Not just tall...big and tall.)

Just something about the guy bothers me - he is a great talent, but there is something missing, some intangible, sorta like Lebron.

he is one of those super-talented players that seems to lack that extra ingredient that wins championships.

I like Marc Gasol as well - what is his contract/FA status the next two years ?

Russell - Cowens - Bird - Garnett

I just read, on Yahoo Sports, that Pau Gasol is considering playing for Spain or China if the lockout last very long.  What interested me, though, was that he said he would like to see Marc playing for a franchise with better possibilities...

TP,I agree with what you're saying with ur Robin,Batman theory.First off, whichever team gets Dwight will definitely have to pay him Batman-type money and finding a Batman to accompany Howard won't be as easy to do as some seem to think. Most all the players who are considered#1's(Alpha Dogs)with that killer instinct are already rapped up.Even if you could find that Batman he would expect to get the same type money as Dwight. If the new CBA has a hardcap it will be tougher to sign two, three big money players than it once was with the softcap. If you're going out on the limb to sign a big contract player its best to make sure he has all the tools to be that guy(Alpha Dog)and the rest will take care of itself.

Can i say i honestly can't believe what i'm hearing Marc gasol is a better fit for the celtics than dwight howard.  In what way shape or form is that even possible.  I honestly just threw up on myself reading this.  The celtics and doc rivers live by defense and Dwight howard is the most dominating Bigman in todays game defensively and he is getting better offensively.  Come on guys this is rediculous!!!

Maybe some people just think Marc Gasol is less uppity than Dwight Howard.

I just think Dwight Howard is on his way to boston.  Doc signs for 5 more years to go through this with a half decent team.  First of all the writing is on the wall Perk gets traded, Then after perk gets traded (a young decent bigman btw) Doc re-ups for 5 years.  Another thing Bill Russell is Working on Dwight Howard for us The kid idolizes Russell.  Then to top it off Danny has almost slipped up in interviews a couple of times to the point where he is about to say something then say i can't talk about that.  The Writing is on the Wall.  Also don't be surprised if rondo goes in a trade for chris paul.
