I realize that he stunk during his short stint here, but 90% of that can be chalked up to rust/lack of conditioning. Look at his entire career, he has good numbers, certainly would qualify to come off the bench for us as a back up 4.  Wonder if that will happen, or is Doc going to block that possibility?

idk - might as well see how the roster pans out and if there is an extra spot on the bench , give him the minimum.

I doubt he is ever able to contribute again but you never know

If he's the primary backup at the #4, we are in for a long season...  As a third option, that would be fine.

I think he's definitely worth a consideration, but much later in the offseason once more important chips are in place.

Yeah, this is where I am.  I am not opposed to giving him another look, but he would be at the bottom of the list of priorities.  If, by the end of the summer (or whenever free agency takes place), they have a need for a stretch big man at the end of the bench, he would be worth a shot.  But, lets fill the other holes first, and see where the roster stands.

I wouldn't be surprised if Danny addresses that skillset in the draft anyways, which could make Murphy a bit redundant, considering they just can't count on him.

So, if not rust, what really happened to Murphy? I mean, he went from being a pretty good shooter and hard nose rebounding big man to zip. He's not that old, not injured (except for the ankle thing he got). Everything points to him being able to contribute as a backup big for this team. They need more rebounding...check. They need a good scoring, stretch big off the bench...check. Granted, he's not a defensive stalworth. I think he's definitely worth another look, of course for the right price.

If its between Baby and Murphy as our back up four I take Murphy in a heartbeat. If we can sign Murphy to a vet minimum contract to play the 5th man in the big man rotation. (KG, JO, PF, C, Murphy). Even though he was god awful last year. He has put up some great numbers in the past and from my point of view you can never have too many 7 foot bodies on the team.

Agreed. Murphy once was someone who could help us.

Once these guys fall off a cliff, there's no turning back ... Raef Lafrentz style. I have a suspicion that Troy fell off the cliff even though he's still pretty young and should be able to contribute.

He needs to prove himself again like a rookie in the summer.

Troy Murphy deserves the vet min for being able to hold his face up straight. His nose is that large.

Didn't he have back problems? I'd say that would contribute to his downslide

I am pretty sure he has had them throughout his career.  He also was dealing with injuries all season in NJ.

I think injuries played a role in his play last year, but the question is whether they are ones he is still recovering from, or if he is just breaking down.

Just because he isn't technically injured any longer doesn't mean his former injuries didn't cause permanent effects.

Ray Allen is a prime example - he was never the same athlete again after his surgeries

Medical Staff should make the call on Murphy.  Before last year he could play and if he gets back to form would help quite a bit.

As a i said before statistically a top 50 fantasy player before last year.

are you referring to Ray's ankle surgeries from a few years ago?

Murphy missed most of the preseason and the beginning of the regular season due to a back injury.  He also had injuries to his groin and to his foot / ankle throughout the season.

I know there were rumors within the Nets organization that Murphy's legs were shot.
