I can't remember a Celtics player who seemed to try so hard to alienate himself from the fan base.

BBD should be a fan favorite.  At times, he's been the hustle player that we all love to root for.

Unfortunately, more often he's the guy who resists what the team asks him to do, the guy who injures himself, the guy who is looking to get paid, the guy who wants a bigger role, the guy who can't stay in shape, the guy who wants to take more shots than Pierce and Allen, the guy who thinks he's better than he is.

I don't like the latter guy very much.  BBD has value off the bench, but his attitude and his mouth make a lot of people wish he'd just go away.  "Glen" can "be Glen" in another city.

I think you are 100% wrong.  Davis has been an amazingly versatile player for us, and has been willing to do what was needed.   It's just that simple.  We won't find another player who is so malleable easily.

100% wrong?  Let's parse my statements:

Quote
Unfortunately, more often he's the guy who resists what the team asks him to do,

Repeatedly in the playoffs, BBD refused to set screens, etc., and looked for his own offense.  Doc criticized him multiple times for this.  In his interview today, BBD took a couple of shots at Doc.  They may have been good-natured, and they may not have been, but the " . . . who is going to let Glen Davis be Glen Davis, not let Glen Davis be something they think he should be" and "I tune Doc out" comments rubbed me the wrong way.

Quote
... the guy who injures himself,

The dude hurt his hand getting in a drunken fight with a friend, causing him to miss a ton of games.  That's not even getting into the damage he does to his body by not getting in shape.

Quote
...the guy who is looking to get paid,

BBD has talked about his desire to cash in, and how basketball is a business, numerous times, including before he was drafted and before his last flirtation with free agency.  The "mentally distracted" comments are probably related to free agency, as well.

Quote
... the guy who wants a bigger role,

Again, Davis has talked about how he'd like to be a starter, and Doc has mentioned how a lot of the young guys have been about stats, rather than ubuntu.

Quote
... the guy who can't stay in shape,

This should be self-explanatory.  Numerous times, he's lost weight, only to gain most or all of it back.

Quote
... the guy who wants to take more shots than Pierce and Allen,

See, e.g., 2011 playoffs.  Rather than setting screens, BBD was taking jumpers.  From Doc's comments, it doesn't seem like this was the offensive game plan.

Quote
... the guy who thinks he's better than he is.

See above, collectively.

So, I think "100% wrong" might have been a bit of an exaggeration on your part.  Maybe 15% wrong, but definitely not 100%. ;)

*sigh* BBD is so annoying. Too much talk without sufficient skill to back it up. I'm a C's fan and i'm annoyed by him. I imagine I would be a lot more annoyed if he were part of the Heat or LA or something.

Let me just say that I am a staunch defender of The Trade. But man, what I would give to go back in time and somehow swindle OKC into taking Davis and not Perk.

that he wasn't mentally there this season? I know, I saw how you weren't the same BBD when we needed you most! Now he wants to work on it to be better for some other team?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GEUh5fJO6UU

I don't get it.  What are you complaining about?  Davis is just being very honest and being his own worst critic.  And he's obviously talking about the way the season ended and basically reiterating what he said back then, about how he felt lost.  He's saying that he needs to work on being more mentally tough.  Does anyone disagree with that!!!!

God how I wish people would stop SCAPEGOATING him.  I don't love Glen Davis, but we clearly need him, if we can sign him for a reasonable amount.  Every other thread that isn't about hating Davis is about how desperately we need bigs.

Sorry, I don't get what you are saying. I'm not "hating" or trying to "scapegoat" him... he clearly said he doesn't work on the mental side (as if that isn't one of the most important parts of the game), but now that he may go elsewhere, he finally decides it's about time he does. Instead of working on it when it was useful for the team! Also, I didn't say anything about him as a player... but anyone could see he wasn't the same player (he said it himself)! Who said we couldn't use BBD? I just find it funny you wanna work on things that you should have worked on to excel in the role given... not b/c you could be a starter somewhere else! People always want to be bigger than they are which causes them to screw-up what they are!
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

Well, if he is gone, I hope Danny has a plan on how to replace him.

For all of his supposed faults, if he leaves we will need an experienced sub for Kevin Garnett - not someone that KG will have to spend time teaching. We have perhaps one more shot next year and we need to throw our best team out there.

I think Glen Davis needs to be a part of that team next year.

If he is gone, who will replace him, on the cheap, that's out there right now? I'm not one for any player holding a franchise hostage and expecting more than what they may be worth, but seriously if Glen "Big Baby" Davis leaves who can realistically be had to fill the void behind KG?

To me, all it sounds like is Glen just needs some mental tuning.

If he is gone it will be very interesting to see who Danny brings in to replace him and gel with KG and the rest of the team, because this guy replacing Glen will have to hit the deckplates running. I think the guy backing up KG will be the most important player on the Celtic's roster next year, and I hope it's Glen Davis.

We can't trade pending free agents on draft night.

BBD is out of his mind, the guy should visit a doctor. Using the third person is something else. I think he's a talented player, but he thinks he's better, and he cannot realize how much he's hurting himself.

I'd S&T BBD for Yi Jianlian right now, even without including the proverbial chair... but he's also a free agent. I don't think the Celtics can work a S&T, and I doubt BBD will find a better contract anywhere. I think he'll be available for cheap, but I guess he will join some egos in South Beach. Could they S&T him for Dexter Pittman + a sign & traded Dampier? That would be fine, and he'd get to play with some other babies.

I'd rather have Sheed than BBD.

Good riddance.

And **** @ people saying that the Baby haters are "overreacting based on one bad playoff series". He's been terrible for years.

He played acceptably for a single month at the beginning of last season, which got him into the 6th man of the year award discussion, and then proceeded to suck the rest of the year and through the playoffs like he's always done. Simple regression to the mean. This guy doesn't bring anything to a winning basketball team except a (fat) body.

Ah, I wasn't bothered all that much? And I won't be surprised if Davis thrives on a less talented team, much like T.A. in Memphis - another sometimes unfocused, sometimes unloved C's role player. And how many among the fan base would like to have Tony under contract after all?

There's also something to be said for continuity. I don't relish the thought of returning only four players who studied defense under Thibodeau, who played - and won - on the NBA's brightest stage. (Although, ok, sure, if I had to pick four...)

...that he threw around the court to good effect? He posted the third highest Defensive Rating on the team after Garnett and Rondo - good enough for top 20 league wide - and the fourth most Defensive Win Shares.

you make it sound like we're doomed without BBD. the guy backing up KG is not the most important player. It's KG. then Rondo. then Pierce and Allen. If we sat down and thought hard about it, i'm sure people here could come up with a list of guys who can fill BBD's role. Plus, that guy will likely not be the ballhog that BBD is! :P

What's important though is that whoever they get is signed/traded before training camp starts. A lot of chemistry is built in training camp. This is also partly why I'm so confident in Jeff Green's performance making a big leap from last year's lackluster showing.
