I would not be surprised for DeShawn Sims, the Michigan standout to be in the Celtics Camp.
He was the D-League Rookie of the year, averaging 20.3 points a game for the Maine Red Claws.
He has good athleticism at 6'8 and has extended his excellent mid-range jumper to the 3 point arc.
Jon Jennings thinks that he is NBA talent.  I saw him play a couple of times and can attest that he has a solid skill set.
He might be a good role player.

I recognize that winning "Rookie of the Year" in the D' League is almost an oxymoron in itself.
However, when looking at the upcoming draft, having a player of Sim's caliber on your D'League affilate allows you to
draft other positions.

I watched his career at Michigan. The guy has a lot of talent but never seems to be able to put it all together. I'm not sure if it's a work ethic thing. Hopefully not getting drafted has lit a fire.

Is it true that he played out of position (the 5) in college, and though he has since moved to the 4, he might have potential as a 3?

can we just call him up because he plays for the red claws? we don't have to draft him right? we just pluck him out from the D league and he takes up a roster spot?

Sorry it might be a stupid question but I am completely ignorant of the D league vs trade laws.

I'm sure the C's will look at a lot of candidates from the D-league, this year's undrafted players and FA's to fill in the wide range of potentially-available roster spots.  I wouldn't expect them to come away with more than 1 (if that) viable prospect from that group that would see any court time if they make the team.

Sorry it might be a stupid question but I am completely ignorant of the D league vs trade laws.

We don't own his rights.  It's not like minor league baseball.  In the NBA you only have a max of 15 players under contract.  We'd have to sign him to a contract; he's basically a FA.

I'd imagine he's probably as good as many of the guys that will be selected in the 2nd round this year - i'd love to see him in camp

same with a lot of D-Leaguers

Having a Boris Diaw-type of player on this team wouldn't suck.  I doubt he'd get to that point without sticking to an NBA roster for a couple of years.

I was surprised to see that a great deal of the Red Claws offense was about finding Sims, who seemed to run the same baseline east/west cuts that Ray does.  He was playing at a high level of confidence and called for the ball on the catch and shoot.  The fact that he went over 30 points 7 plus times this season is also of interest.  In the D league everyone is basically looking to build their own, so scoring at a solid clip is difficult at times.

I think he is better than a good number of first round picks.  I think the Celtics (who by the way wanted him in camp last fall after his play on the summer squad)  will give him a close look.  My question is can he play any 2 guard or is he only a 3 at this point?

As a Michigan fan, I liked Sims.  He's very athletic, and looks like he's improved his shooting.  At Michigan, he was asked to play a very weird role for his abilities (the Kevin Pittsnogle role for those of you who remember 2005 West Virginia.)  He did his best at it without much complaint (unlike Manny Harris,) although unfortunately for everyone involved was very miscast in that role.

Still, even with improved shooting, he seems to me to be like Jeff Green, but not as good.  That's an okay player to have on the bench at the league minimum, but we're talking our third-string 3/small 4, and not someone to fall in love with.

I think he's more of a 4 than a 3, so I doubt he can play any 2 guard.  I think he's closer to a more athletic Harangody than "like Jeff Green, but not as good".  I'm not sure what the chances are for an undersized power forward whose best offense is mid-range jumpers and who reportedly lacks a post game.

I have a hunch DeShawn Sim and Stephane Lasme will be on the roster for next year. And I'll be stoked if they make it. This past season not having Hustle players hurt the team. It was once Big Baby role before he got bigheaded.
