I don't know... Marc Jackson must be completely different off air.  On air he comes off as dumb, time and time again.

The human cliche' machine is going to see how it is when Tim Donaghy I, II, III, and IIII are not his announcing asset.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
great commentator and very smart guy.

He is very good at analyzing the flow of a game and where he thinks adjustments should be made.

He will have an easier time than you think because he will command respect from that young team and also help their potential all star combo at the PG/SG positions as they develop.
Steph Curry will be the biggest benefactor of this move.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Well put, Chambers.

I don't know why people hate that commentary trio.  In my view that was one of the more entertaining and analytical national crews assebled in a while.  They joked a lot, but i was always impressed by how they were willing to call out officials and be critical of some of david sterns policies.

Jackson seems like one of the more likeable guys in the nba and should have a lot of clout with the players considering his impressive point guard resume.  I can see him having an avery johnson-esque coaching impact on a kid like steph curry. Johnson has been given a lot of credit for helping shape Dirks more refined offensive skillset; i can't see how this move does anything but help curry develope his 'floor general' skills, which is clearly top priority in Oak-town.

Just to throw this out there, Jackson could very well be a good coach.

I just don't like the learning the coaching trade by starting out as the head coach.

He must have some hidden intelligence somewhere.  I imagine a GM listening to the cliche'-filled idiocy and the gushing messiah lovefest must know Jackson outside of the booth...Because Jackson in the broadcast booth reminds me of Dennis Miller on Monday Night Football where valuable information about the game is concerned.

Jackson wouldn't last 5 minutes in a coaching interview if all he brought to the table is the biased cliched bilge he brings to the broadcast booth.

Why do NBA teams keep giving these jobs to guys with no coaching experience?

Doc Rivers...I'm having trouble finding information on whether or not he was an assistant coach in his gap from the end of his playing days to Orlando, but he won Coach of the Year in his first year with the Magic with a questionable roster.
Doc was essentially an assist coach, third string PG for the last few years of his career. The Spurs hired him as a radio commentator I believe to keep him around the team and with the organization. I believe he worked with the players still if not as an official coach.

If Greg Popovich had been fired Doc was probably going to be the Spurs next coach.

Well, Marc Jackson was also a PG. I can't say I remember if he was seen as an assistant coach or not in his latter playing years like Doc, but it sounds like comparing him to Doc is very fair at least as far as their career paths, considering the fact Doc also commentated for NBA on ABC for one year, also doing the 2004 NBA Finals commentating with Al Michaels.

So that all said, If Doc could get a head coaching job, I don't see a reason why Marc Jackson shouldn't get a shot. I honestly don't know how well he'll do, but I honestly can't sit back and call him so under-qualified like some people in here are doing.

Yeah, Mark Jackson had a lot of the mental characteristics you look for that seem to translate well from playing days to coaching. The leadership, the communication skills, the BBIQ and understanding of the game of the game of basketball. Plus a background in elite team defensive schemes even though he was a limited defender himself.

Also learned under some incredible coaches -- Pat Riley, Larry Brown, Jerry Sloan and to a lesser degree Jeff Van Gundy + the man that he calls the best coach he ever played for, Rick Pitino.

I'm not Rivers' biggest fan...And I also understand the eras are different....And that a lot of Jackson's gushing and schtick is league-directed.  I thought Rivers brought a lot to the booth.  He wasn't Doug Collins as an analyst...But Rivers analysis made the game easy to understand and follow.  Jackson simply adds nothing substanitive to a telecast....Nothing at all.  It's as if the NBA thinks that their viewership have IQs of 50 basketball IQs of grade schoolers when listening to Jackson's bilge.

His offensive accomplishments as an NBA point guard qualify him for a coaches job.

I wonder if Jackson will notice when the messiah takes his 3-5 step travels when he's coaching the messiah's opponent....Because he sure as hell has never seen him travel from a broadcast booth.
