Can you coach a team using hyperbole and faux toughness?  ::)

At least he's out of the ABC booth after this season.  1/3 of the way there.

Why do NBA teams keep giving these jobs to guys with no coaching experience?

This was my thought exactly.

Warriors just suffered through an up-and-down season with a rookie head coach in Keith Smart, only to fire him and install a successor with even less coaching experience.

Does anyone find it interesting that Scottie Pippen, who has been trying to get a coaching job for years, has never been seriously considered for one even though he has six rings and was one of the smartest players ever to play?

Yet, guys like Vinny Del Negro and Mark Jackson get hired with no experience at all.

Pippen doesn't do anything.

I wonder about guys like Ewing who work as assistant coaches.

I think there is an established food chain of coaching candidates.

Agreed on Ewing.

I mean, what did Jackson do that Pippen doesn't?

Pippen, when discussing this, has brought up an interesting point in regards to him lacking coaching experience - that on the Bulls, he was the de-facto coach on the floor, even moreso than MJ, that at times he had to rein him in.

Who knows?

Not that it makes him qualified or anything but Pippen was doing guest color commentary for a bunch of the early round Bulls playoffs games for WGN/Comcast Chicago.

I actually thought he came across pretty well for a color commentator.

Pippen would be a disaster in Golden State.  Pippen would expect defense...That would be silly in Golden State.  Jackson is a better choice for the Warriors.  Jackson played the same stellar defense over his stellar career that Golden State has the last 5 years.

How is Jackson going to do when the team he gushes over shamelessly is playing his Warriors?

I think Pippen would make an excellent coach. Particularly an assistant coach but I could see him as a head coach also.

He had a reputation for helping his teammates, teaching them, during practices ... showing them how to improve their positioning defensively, changing their stances, how to play quality defense + all about how the offense creates opportunities for them. He had an incredible in-depth knowledge of the game and was able to share and pass that knowledge down to his lesser teammates.

Plus, all the qualities he showed on the court. The leadership, the communication. The respect he carried from his teammates.

Those sound like the type qualities to me that would make a terrific assistant coach.

Tyronn Lue and Sam Cassell are too ugly to be chosen.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

At least he's out of the ABC booth after this season.  1/3 of the way there.

That is fantastic news! ABC might get a lot better. I actually don't mind JVG. And the removal of Jackson could help tone down the schtick.

Uhm, I don't really understand where you're coming from on expecting defense.  The Warriors aren't inherently a terrible defensive team. Just because they are the Warriors doesn't mean they have to be bad at defense.  The last few years they have been bad because their roster is full of young guys who were brought up in an up-tempo system that rewarded them for shooting more and defending less.  A new coach, new ownership, and a changing roster means the Warriors can become a more traditional team with better defense.

Yes, for now they still have Curry, Ellis, and Lee as their core pieces -- guys who haven't played much defense in their careers.  But they haven't been asked to, either, and none of them is incapable of playing at least decent defense.
Never forget the Champs of '08, or the gutsy warriors of '10.

Warriors = an undersized backcourt + finesse three + below average defensive PF + one of the worst defensive Cs in the league

That is their starting lineup. With the exception of Udoh, they don't have much defense off the bench either in their rotation.

Keith Smart did about as well as one could do defensively with such limited personnel. I thought he did well to get 36 wins out of that roster.

----------------------------------------------

But at least it sounds like their ownership is committed to changing that and are targeting a defensively talented center to anchor their interior defense. That will make a big difference.

If they traded one of those small guards for a SF with legit size and above average D, plus the center they acquired in free agency, the Warriors defensive prospects could get interesting in hurry.

Steph Curry is capable of playing mediocre defense. Monta Ellis is an above average defender at the point. So whichever one of those they keep. Then Dorrel Wright as a two guard is an above average defender (not at SF, lightweight physically, gets pushed around too easily). Then the newly acquired SF (say Iggy). David Lee (preferably Udoh). Plus, hopefully a free agent center (Oden? Nene? M.Gasol? D.Jordan?).

That would be a pretty good defensive lineup. Quality shot-blocker at the rim. Elite wing defender. Average to above average defenders in the backcourt. Weak link in David Lee but they can work around him. A potential high quality PF defender in Udoh to replace him someday (please!). Defensive talent there.

That is what it looks like the ownership is hoping / planning to do this summer or sometime in the near future.
