KG is not even close to the level that Shaq, JO, or Sheed are/were.

He is still at his age a top PF in the game and is a dominant defender. Not to mention his great rebounding, and at the very least above average offensive game (lethal mid range).

KG from what I've read and heard of him is not the type of guy that is going to come into camp or come into a season out of shape (I.E. Shaq, JO, Sheed) and with his body type I just don't really see this happening.

If he wanted to I bet he could play another 5 years in the league and his 5th year would probably be better and less injury free than Shaq right now. I don't think he will play tht long but at least 2 more years and I'm thinking closer to 3 or 4 more.

at 34-35 he was still voted second in DPOY and was 1st team all defense. He is bar none the best defensive PF in the game. Now those skills might decline a bit but I highly doubt he goes from this year to being a liability on defense in two years. Most of these guys as they get older, IMO the main problem is their defense, and footwork. KG is not a shotblocking guy so although he relies somewhat on athelticism on D I think the majority is positioning, mental, experience with him.

If KG can maintain at least being a good to average defender for a few years (again I don't see how he can just drop to nothing all of a sudden) he would be playing for a while at least as pick and pop type option.

I'm trying to understand why people think he is going to retire?

He just doesn't feel like playing anymore?
He isn't good enough?
He said this past season could be his last?

When I actually think about who we are talking about KG is the last person that falls into this category.

I think the thing with KG is he's too old now to be relied upon for offense.  He is still, as you say, the best defensive PF in the game.  I think he can play another few years in that role as a defensive stopper and leader of the team defense, with some scoring (from mid-range and easy inside shots) and rebounding thrown in.  A Marcus Camby / Ben Wallace kind of role.  What he can't do is be expected to take 20 shots a night in major games anymore, the way Doc tried to use him against Miami.

In order for KG to continue to play at a high level for this team and not break down (mentally and physically) they need to get guys around him who can carry the load offensively so he no longer has to be a top 3 option on that end of the floor and he can focus on being crazy intense on defense.

Jackie MacMullan just said she has a gut feeling KG might walk away. Says he took the Miami loss harder than anyone.

She's on WEEI right now

She also said that it was just her talking and no one told her that KG was retiring.

I really dislike Jackie, always have.  She takes shots at players and starts rumors.

Funny, I've always loved her insight.  She is more in tune than most people reporting on the C's.  If she has a gut feeling, bet there is something to it.  That said, no way KG retires!

He still remains an all star and one of the best power forwards.
Kevin you are the best, Kg is the soul of the Celtics, he can still play at high level.

This can not be, Iverson, Sheed ...

I remember reading KG's blog when he hurt his calf this season, dude was ready to go out there carrying his leg in his hands with him if need be. The guy talked like basketball to him was like crack to a base-head! It gave me the feeling that this dude will have huge mental problems if he can't play... go look at the blog. I would easily believe a newspaper article 1 month after he retires saying he either went crazy and was admitted to a facility or something, b/c his life IS basketball!
I don't know whether to be happy about that or worried for him. I love a person who is dedicated and passionate about the game, but that seems a little too much. I did see when I think NBA or ESPN had all those player talking about the season and what basketball meant to them. He had that life is basketball and he couldn't live not playing. That's probably why he has so many of the young players such as Noah and Bosh looking up to him and having him as their idol. Looking back and remebering what he wrote, Danny has to get some players to help him win a ring and end with a bang. He should go out like  David Robinson did with the Spurs in 03.

Jackie is probably mad because KG didn't give her a molehill to make a mountain out of after the game. ;D

I respect the heck out of Jackie MacMullen, but sounds to me like she's trying to drum up hits to ESPN Boston....

  • It's not hard to work hard.
Jackie is an outstanding reporter and a great basketball writer--Celtics fans have been lucky to have writers like her and Bob Ryan for so long.

Not at all. Not for a second. She qualified her comments repeatedly with the caveat that it was merely her opinion. It was modestly presented.

She is, IMO, the best at what she does.

Also, she's as graceful a person as you're likely to meet.

I hope KG stays; I think he still has a lot to contribute, though in fewer minutes, and he's my favorite of the Big 3. If he does, however, decide to hang 'em up, it would be cool if he OK'd a trade so that even in his departure he somehow helps the C's.

i love how people say KG wore down at the end of the year.  Makes NBA defensive first team.  Drops 28 and 18 in game 3... 28 and 18!  Are you kidding me?!  Who else has done that these playoffs other than ZBO?

To me Pierce looked the most worn down at the end of the year.. Doc needs to keep KG's mins at around 30 a night but get Pierce's down to about that level next year as well.
