UPDATE No. 3: Shaquille O'Neal's mother, Lucille, tells The Times-Picayune that her son may play next season for the Celtics.

"He went there to help them win a championship, and they didn't do that this year," Lucille said. "It bothered him so much that he could not play. He felt like he let the Boston team down and the community down, so I could believe he's going back to Boston. He's not in a place to be traded or anything like that."

She wanted to make sure to know that Shaq has not revealed his plans to her.

"I don't know because Shaquille has got such passion for the game," Lucille said. "[Retirement] we've always told him that's up to him. Whatever decision he makes, we're still going to be behind him 100 percent."

----

UPDATE No. 2: According to Chris Forsberg of ESPN Boston, Celtics coach Doc Rivers offered this about Shaq's status Monday on his weekly WEEI radio appearance.

""He's not definitely said [whether he'll retire]... I would say yes, but I don't know. I really don't know."

---

UPDATE: Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge says he is not counting on Shaq to be with the Celtics next season.

"[Shaq's future] doesn't matter right now, from any of our planning, at this minute," Ainge told ESPNBoston.com. "I like everybody to just take some time off after emotional losses and get your heads together and we'll talk about that in a future time."

I hope he just retires already. He's done. Having to watch Danny trot out the 3 old gray mares for another season is going to be hard enough. Just don't try to sell me on Shaq again or I might just have to hang it up!

I think he doesn't make a decision one way or another. If the season is shortened he has more time to decide. With a shortened season be more likely to finish the season healthy.

He's an awfully big asset when he's healthy...(that's a big 'if' though.)

I hope that his ego tells him that he can't let a career like that end on a whimper like this past season did.

Isn't that the point though? He hasn't been healthy in FIVE years. Counting on Shaq to make it through the season healthy is like counting on Marquis Daniels to make it through the season healthy. Shaq being a "big asset" is what lead to the Perk trade in the first place and even more directly to our early 2nd round exit. Why go through this again?

I hope Shaq comes back.

He was still a quality basketball player last season.

Hope not.

He stated right after he signed with us that he was on a "720 Day" program.

Well, he's only halfway through that.

I know he's old, and he's been injured because of that and his size, but I'm holding out hope that he can still give us something.

For the Vet Min, he was an absolute steal for us last season, and would be again this season if he could give us some minutes.

Shaq is done. Its sad I really think if he was healthy we go at least 7 with the heat. But he couldn't heal from an injury where a young guy would have been back and playing. I dont think its fair to handcuff the team like that again. I think it was something like Shaq played a total of 10 minutes since Feb. Thats crazy.. The only way I welcome him back if he is on the bench except for maybe 8 minutes a night.. Other then that get younger athletic guys that can finsih around the rim and stay HEALTHY!

I'd love to see Shaq back, just heal that leg fully. I think he could be a good, solid piece for our run next year.

Please retire Shaq and come on board as a big man coach for the Celts. Couldn't imagine a better situation for him or the Celts.

Fool me once, shame on you....Fool me twice, shame on me.

If I have any expectation of Shaq contributing next year after expecting it for the playoffs this year and being so sorely disappointed by losing to those chumps second round because he couldn't contribute, then I am a big dope.

Shaq's done, let him go. Disappointment comes from enough places in life. Especially as a Cs fan since '08.

I don't need any more glimmers of hope extinguished by old age and injuries.

The smart thing to do would be to have a couple of players you can count on and Shaq, and play Shaq sparingly during the season. If he's healthy in the playoffs it's a great boon, if he's not you're covered. Don't pencil him in as your starting center, but if anyone thinks our last center off the bench is more important than even a 40% possibility of a contributing Shaq they're kidding themselves.

The issue with Shaq this year was that we had Perkins and Jermaine O'Neal who were hurt for so long early on.  If we can get a younger center to play some minutes than I'd have no issue with Shaq on this roster.  Let him sit the first 60 games on the inactive list, play the last 20, get in game shape and play 15 minutes a night in the post season.
