Jeez, that would be an absolute dreadful move (trading away #2 pick for veteran help).
For a 17 win team, that is a million miles away from fielding a winner, to trade away the chance to draft a quality young prospect in favour of bringing in a veteran player ... just awful.
Rebuild. Do it properly. Don't do it half-assed.
What is he trying to do? Win 35 games? Finish in 10th place in the West? And have wasted away all his opportunities at building anything meaningful? How are they ever going to build a contender if they keep making dim witted moves like this.
Rebuild. Do it properly. Things take time. Continue to collect top 5 picks. Try to draft better players than you have done so far. Develop them. Let them grow as unit. The team gradually improves. Now a playoff team or close to it. Add to the team with a trade and/or free agency. Continue to develop your young veteran stars. Turn it into winner.
Good things take time. Stop rushing. Be patient. Please.
Didn't you suggest trading Love and Beasely in another thread?
I'm just kidding you I don't think such a trade necessarily negates your call for patience, considering that Williams will evolve into a "ready" player very quickly if not immediately, and Love/Beasely could bring back vets as well as potential....
I'd say keep Love and trade Beasely, Rubio and D. Williams for Kanter plus a load of other stuff, including a 2012 first rounder from a lottery-type team....
I have nothing against trading the pick for a high quality prospect.
It's the idea of trading it for veteran help that I hate.
Derrick Williams could be worth a prospect and some veteran help imo.
anyway, I was referring to your idea of trading Love and Beasely as going against the grain of your also preaching patience. They've been waiting a long time for all their young picks to add up to something, and trading Love would seem like impatience if they did it for young prospects instead of young "vets" (I'd describe Love as a young vet). Derrick Williams should also very quickly reach young vet status I would think....
I would trade Michael Beasley because I consider him the second most harmful player (to his own team) in the NBA behind Andrea Bargnani. Just removing him from the team will improve the T'Wolves.
I would take whatever they can get for Beasley just to get rid him off the team. And they could probably get a useful first round draft pick. Possibly as high as a mid-first rounder but at least a late first rounder. Something valuable.
I would trade Kevin Love because I believe he is an over-rated player. I consider him a top 15 PF but not the elite player (All-Star, All-NBA level talent) that some consider him. Nowhere near it, in fact.
And Minnesota are preparing to give him a very large contract extension this summer + Love could command an even larger (max contract) as a free agent the following summer if he doesn't re-sign. Which frankly frightens me.
Given those factors, I think Kevin Love offers the team more as a trade asset than as a player. I think they can acquire a better young high level talent.
A secondary reason why I would be willing to trade Kevin Love is because I consider Anthony Randolph to be a very good prospect. A quality replacement at PF (not today but in the future). Someone who'll be worth his weight in gold to whoever develops him properly.
Anyway, those are the reasons why I would try to trade those players if I were Minny.
