Question guys, I thought teams can't trade picks in back to back years. What happens to our clippers 2012 pick since the cavs get the clippers pick this year?

CB Draft LA Lakers: Lamarcus Aldridge, Carmelo Anthony,Jrue Holiday, Wes Matthews  6.11, 7.16, 8.14, 8.15, 9.16, 11.5, 11.16

The Celtics pick from the Clippers (via OKC) is unprotected in 2016, I believe. Correct?

Yes.  It's protected until then, but we will absolutely get their pick in 2016 at the latest (unlike those three second-rounders that Sacramento "owes" us, which literally we will never get unless they suddenly become a title contender).

They have to have at least one first round pick next year. It doesn't need to be their own but they have one.

I am not sure if they have another pick or not. Aren't they owed a first rounder from the Timberwolves? I don't know.

Update: Yeah, they own the T'Wolves pick next year. Unprotected. So they can send the Celtics their own pick next year despite trading their pick this season.

First off, wow, those were some pretty crazy odds (2.4%) that the Clippers number would get drawn.  Its does seem to happen a little too often though, especially for that low of odds.  It does make you wonder.

What I really don't understand is how the Clippers were even allowed to trade the pick. As far as I am aware, you are not allowed to trade consecutive future 1st round picks.  The Clippers already potentially owe us their 2012 1st.  The only way I could even see it being allowed is because the pick they owe us is conditional.

Also, I wonder if due to the fact the pick they owe us is conditional, due to league rules, they were only allowed to trade the pick if it was unconditional?  If they had traded the pick conditionally, how would that have affected the conditional pick they owe us next year had Cleveland not received the pick this year?

Regardless, it does really show how incompetant the Clippers ownership/management is.  Pathetic!

EDIT:  Ok, just saw the comment above as to how they were allowed to trade the pick.

Each team has at least one representative,  and multiple media members are there each year to see the ping-pong process. The thought that the NBA fixes it each year is silly, and perpetuated by the ill-informed (David Kahn).

Geez!  Now that I see how they were allowed to trade the pick, it is even more ridiculous that they traded the pick unconditionally.

Even if Mo Williams is better than Baron Davis, which is highly questionable, and even considering the money they saved, it just isn't worth losing the #1 pick.  Sure, the odds that it would happen are low, but that is why you trade conditionally.

Dumb, dumb Clippers, is right.

You're right that it is highly unlikely the NBA fixes the lottery, but to call it a silly question or thought, is silly in itself.

Do you know with 100% certainty it is not?  Are you present in all of David Stern's proceedings.  Who knows what Sterm does behind closed doors.  But I would not be at all surprised if it was something nefarious.

Isn't starting a thread entitled "dumb, dumb Clippers" kind of like "bright, bright sun" or "cold, cold ice"? It kind of goes without saying...

;D ;D

I guess my invite must've got lost in the mail.

Here's what I do know:

Each team has one representative to view the process. It's in each of their interest to make sure a fair process goes down, because, that's kinda their job.

There are multiple media members present. Its in their interest to make sure things a fair process goes down - because if it doesn't - they've got an enormous story on their hands that'd help put their kids' kids through college, because, that's kinda their job.

In light of these undeniable facts, how exactly would David Stern rig the lottery process?

The top pick in this year's draft may as well be a worse player than Mo Williams, as far as NBA career is concerned.
"I don't know half of you half as well as I should like; and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve."

Here's a piece from Darren Rovell detailing the Lottery process from when he was invited to view it back in 2002.

Yes, each team has a representative present watching the proceedings.  But, do they know whta they're watching.  The numbers drawn represent a number combination that is assigned to an unknown team.  I'd like to know who does determine what number combinations go to what teams.  A computer?  Who says the program isn't designed to pick specific number combos for specific teams.  Who says the balls aren't weighted to draw a desired number combo.  Thes could be things Stern does behind closed doors without any teams knowledge.

I don't actually beleive any of this, but, it is not outside the realm of possibility.

While I don´t believe in a conspiracy, this argumentation isn´t really waterproof.

If you fix the lottery through balls with different weights or pneumatic systems, it doesn´t matter if the representatives or journalists are watching.
In the summer of 2017, I predicted this team would not win a championship for the next 10 years.

3 down, 7 to go.

Are you guys suggesting that what these representatives and media members are seeing is a state of the art hologram machine?

"Sit in this pod, fools!" - David Stern

Or perhaps the representatives and media members are the holograms?

No, just that your argumentation isn´t waterproof. Siegfried and Roy aren´t really magicians, but can "teleport" white tigers, too.
