WEEI: Doc: Any of big 3 could come off bench, not happy with BBD's play

Asked about the possibility of facing a rebuilding process in Boston, Rivers said he felt obligated to see it through.

"I don't think anyone's looking forward to that, but I'm willing to do that," he said. "I had a group that has been very loyal to me. I think it would have been very easy for me to just run and go somewhere else and chase something else."

Added Rivers: "It would have been easier to do it the other way; I just don't think it's the right thing to do. Coaches talk about loyalty and team all the time. I just thought it was time to show it. And that's what I did."

Rivers said he would consider bringing any of the Big Three off the bench and that he wants to be more creative with the minutes he gives to veterans such as Kevin Garnett. He spoke highly of Jeff Green and Nenad Krstic, saying he wants both of them back, but was less complimentary about Glen Davis, who struggled in the playoffs.

Said Rivers: "I thought it was more in between his ears than his play. I thought the whole contract thing affected his play. I thought he had the wrong focus at times because of that. I think when you stray away from just being a team player and being the role that you're given, I think you struggle. I think all players do. And I thought Baby did that.

"I thought scoring was way too important to him, instead of being who he is. Baby's never going to be a great scorer in our league, but he can score. What Baby has to be is an energy player, a guy who takes charges."

That said, Rivers insisted he'd still like to see Davis return to Boston.

"Yeah, if we get him for the right price," he said. "I think it would be nice, but we can't overpay. That will be up to Danny and Wyc [Grousbeck] and them. That's one of the things I stay out of, at least I try to.

"We've got to get him back in the right frame of mind. And that's the way he was the last 20 games. Baby's a good basketball player. He can help us or any other team. But, to me, only if he plays the right way."

If anyone is going to come off the bench, I think it has to be PP. Ray's shooting is needed in the starting lineup to space the floor and Jeff Green is most effective playing big mins at the SF position(25 min a night at least )He can get 5-10 mins more at PF. that would leave about 35 mins a game for PP backing up Green and Ray, keeping him fresh for the playoffs.


I don't want any part of bringing BBD back unless its for the vet min for 1 year.

Does bringing one of the "big 3" off the bench mean they're not good enough to start, their minutes need to be reduced, or the bench is that bad that the talent has to be diluted?  I think it's the last 2, but I doubt you'll ever seen Pierce not starting in a Celtic uniform.

I'm hoping some team overpays for Davis so that he has the opportunity to start for a team other than the Celtics.  And as much as it was mental with him, and his desire to look for his shots, I think it was also physical.  He looked slower and heavier than he's ever been in the NBA.  For his sake I hope he doesn't turn into another Tractor Trailer case

They were talking on WEEI about how Baby fired his trainer mid way through this season because he thought he could keep himself in shape and then went on to gain about 15-20lbs by the end of the year .

I wouldn't either, but someone will.  Davis is a quality basketball player, and a proven performer in this league.  Yes, he is a risk, which will keep him from getting a huge contract, but his resume will get him at least 3 years from some team.

  I think it might depend on the offers. If he gets a good offer he'll take it. If not he might sign a short deal with the hopes of improving his play going into the next offseason.

Two words:

DREW GOODEN

The guy was signed lat summer for a mere 6.4M per year for 5 years. Big Guys, albeit short stocky ones, are at a premium and usually get paid.

1.  They guy who needs to come off the bench is KG.  He's really not effective unless he's playing all out and he clearly can't sustain that effort anymore.

2.  So, after almost totally ignoring Krstic and watching Baby stink for 3 of the 4 games against NY and the first 2 games against Miami without doing anything about it, NOW Doc criticizes Baby in the media?  Aaaaaaggggghhhhh!

While I think this is a possibility, I don't think it will be in Boston.  Davis has been clear that he wants a bigger role, and feels like he can do a lot more in this league.  If he signs a "make good" contract, I expect it to be with another team that has a bigger role for him (at least in his mind).

We just need to walk away from BBD.  I realize that he is a decent player but his limitations are too much for my taste.  Not to mention that his propensity to shoot the ball whenever he touches takes away from better players around him.
