I don't think he would have picked up his option if he wasn't 100% sure he wouldn't be dealt.  I'm pretty sure Ray on the open market could command a multiyear deal around 7 mil.  Why would he risk being traded to Toronto or something by making himself an expiring contract?

I think Danny told him he wouldn't be traded.

And so even though there is a thread on here saying we can't talk about Rondo being traded... I think Rondo will be the one traded.

I hope you're right. The way Allen, Pierce, and Garnett played this season warrants them another opportunity to try and get it done one more time. I can't say the same for Rondo. For all the Celtic players, Rondo played like the one who should be shipped out of town, outside of Glen Davis. But no one really cares much about Big baby.

Haha. Rondo has a lot to do with the numbers those three put up. Listening to Danny on WEEI, I don't think trading Rondo's much of a priority for him.

yea Rondo only played through the playoffs with one arm and still kept us close in the Miami games . Oh yea, he also lead the league in assists and set up the big 3 to have career years or pretty close shooting wise .

Ray is an expiring contract of course he is going to be on the trade block. The cs aren't going to win a championship as presently constructed, if Rondo is available in the right trade , Ray Allen is much more available . You have to trade Ray if a deal can bring us back a young athletic talent or lottery pick that can add to the team for 2012 and beyond.

I haven't read any report saying Ray picked up his option, where did you get this news from ?

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
he picked it up one or two days ago.
More money than he could get on the open market anyway.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Ray picking up his contract was a no-brainer and indicates that he wants to be under contract while the CBA in in doubt.  He certainly wouldn't command that kind of money on the open market, particularly with FA money probably being cut going forward and he's not likely to get a deal for more than 2 years (if he gets that).
He's trade bait, just like everyone else and probably very attractive trade bait for a team looking for that final piece of the puzzle to get them over the top.

I don't think the Big Three (or Rondo) will be traded.  As much as Boston cried when Danny was traded in his playing days, I think Boston would be ready to run Danny out of town if any one of the three was traded.   Just like Larry, Kevin, and Chief, (and D. J.) they deserve one more chance.  If Reggie Lewis and Len Bias had lived, Boston would have been a championship threat for years...even with the demise of the original Big Three.

The uproar caused by the Perkins trade was very much like that caused by the Ainge trade.

Surprise us again, Danny.  I know this is new times, and new rules...but get the bridging pieces somehow.

I hear people say this a lot when in fact he didn't lead the league in assists Steve Nash did while playing 4 fewer minutes a game and without 3 HOF's.

Rondo's numbers went so so so down the second half of the year that his assists averaged dropped basically on a daily basis.

He was averaging like 16 assists for the first couple months. After that he just started to do terrible. For him to wind up at 11.2 assists per a game he must have averaged like 6 or 7 assists the  last couple months

It is immaterial.  Because of what  Rondo is capable of, because he was playing through injuries, and because of how he came through, even after that horrible elbow dislocation against Miami in the playoffs, his drop off in the second half of the season is pretty much irrelevant.  Heart can't be taught,  and Rondo combines with basketball skills, court vision and I.Q.  It is a rare combination and there is no guarantee you will get better or even the same back again.  (And yes, I am aware of Rondo's flaws, too).

Unless the team is retooled with no scorers, Rondo's pass first mentality should bode well for the future, too.  The only thing I worry about (also with Delonte) is their all in mentality and injury potential. As Peter Parker would say, 'this is their gift, this is their curse'.

He probably did get Danny's word.

That's a worthless word though

I don't think Danny's word is worthless.  I think, if he really tells someone that he won't trade them, then he would absolutely stick to it.  I just don't think Danny would ever give anyone that word.  Danny is a master of double talk, but I don't think he is a liar.

I wouldn't trade him.  I think he has the chance to be the most effective the longest out of the big 3.  He can play in this role for another 4 years and be fine.
do it

Even if Danny did give him assurances about not being traded...   Ray's not an idiot (far from it).  He's been traded before.  He's heard the rumors in prior years.  He's seen his fellow warriors get traded.

The good part for Ray, if he does get traded it would likely be to a team like Chicago, that maybe wants one last piece at the SG spot.  Ray's an expiring contract but he still has a lot of value to a team like that from a pure basketball perspective.  The teams most likely to make a trade for Ray are those than need an assassin at the SG spot or maybe off the bench, but teams that are winning games and close to a title.  Ray's not going to end his career in obscurity.
