I gotta go with Artis in his rookie year, (1971-1972) ... hard to believe, but he was both the ABA Rookie of the Year and the ABA MVP that year, and check out the stat line, (this is a rookie, mind you):

.598 FG%, 23.8 PPG, 17.8 RPG, 2.7 APG, 5.0 BPG, 43.6 MPG ... not bad for a first-year guy. ;)

With KJ, I think I'll go with 1988-1989, when he was the NBA MIP, and started and played 81 out of 82 games:

.499 FG%, 20.4 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 12.2 APG, .882 FT%.

Thoughts?

Lots of great picks.  Gun to my head, I'd rank my top three as follows:

6th

1. Rasheed Wallace
2. Chris Webber
3. Grant Hill

7th

1. Sidney Moncrief
2. Hal Greer
3. Dennis Johnson

Take this with a grain of salt, though.  First, there were a ton of spectacular picks, and second, I've got binkies as much as the next guy (DJ, for instance).

you sheed lover you

p.s. no way Mullin is after those 3

First he was here
second he was better than some here

Third if he had 2 more inches his first name should be larry

Saying he was better than Christian Laettner isn't much.

Sadly, no ABA seasons, so we can't see the full brilliance of Artis.

Walt Bellamy had 31.6ppg, 19rpg, and 2.7apg his rookie year, and it was in the NBA!
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

Oh well ... another oversight on my part.

Well, if Larry was an inferior passer, rebounder, defender, leader, and winner. ;)

I'll go with 1978-1979 for Gilmore then, still not too shabby:

.575 FG%, 23.7 PPG, 12.7 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.9 BPG, 39.8 MPG ;)

cut it to rebounder and maybe winner.

He was a great passer and certanly a leader of horrible rosters

p.s.2. Of course I didnt count Lettner but shaq the one who should have been on that picture.

It's that first number that I find most impressive.

In 80/81 he shot .670 FG% and had five other years over .600 ... a highly under-appreciated player, IMHO.

(I'm considering starting KJ with Michael as well).

Here's an important Artis stat:

• Dr. J’s afro was good, but Artis Gilmore’s afro was great. You could argue that Gilmore dominated because of his size, his scoring touch and his tenacity in the lane. But don’t underestimate the power of the Afro. It added at least six inches to his already gigantic 7’2” frame, and it was never clear where his head ended and his hair began. He could have easily had an IQ over 300 with a brain that big.

This gives me an idea for a future draft: The ABA Era.

The players eligible will be anyone who played in either the NBA or ABA during the years the ABA was up and running and you can use stats from one year only and it can be either ABA or NBA stats.

Sounds like it would work and we wouldn't have to talk about LeBron or Kobe. :)
