I have a feeling that I need a 1000 word essay for justification on each of my future picks ;D

So what is the difference between a good scorer or good shooter? I think that there is a point where the stats can be nuked too much.

Eddie House is a good shooter. He can shoot the ball very well, and his range extends to about the half-court line. He's not really a good scorer though, because he really only scores off of open looks someone else finds for him.

LeBron James is an elite scorer, but a pedestrian to mediocre shooter. LeBron can put the ball on the floor and can at any time score from any point on the court, but in pure terms of success rates, LeBron James is not a great or even good jumpshooter.

That's the difference. Gary Payton: Good scorer, average to slightly below shooter.

And I have to disagree with you on the DWest comparison - wow. I've seen the two shoot with my own eyes - maybe not in person, but on TV and Video.

Delonte West is a more consistently successful jumpshooter than Gary Payton. He's very far from the complete scorer Payton was, but in terms of straight jumpshooting, West has better range.

I have a feeling that I need a 1000 word essay for justification on each of my future picks ;D

Only if I'm paying attention and work is slow, amiright?

I like the pick...an excellent PG to go with two very talented HOF at the 4 and 5 spot.

With Kareem and KG already on your team, you really don't have to worry about scoring.

For the sake of my sanity, stop beating the Gary Payton horse!!

The guy is a heckuva talent as illustrated by his being drafted in Round 3.  Let's leave it at that for now!

Ok...after combing through other options, I think this one is the best for our team...a defensive-minded passer, who can score:

Gosh Darnitt.

I'm really curious to see how Elgin Baylor & George Gervin can co-exist.

I'm not entirely sure they can.

I cleared it with Elgin before I picked Iceman, Elgin said it was cool.

But seriously.  at this point I had to go with BPA and he was on my board.

It's not just cool...IT's ICE
Yup

So can you show me stats that prove otherwise as far as DWest?

Look, lol...I love Rondo, but are you implying that Gary Dwayne Payton is only as good a shooter as Rondo?

I just checked the stats for Rondo.

Or do we not give Rondo enough credit here on the Forums?

I'm just stating that you can't use ts% as something to display someone's a good shooter.

Well, out of the stats listed there, what else could we use to tell whether someone is a good shooter or not?

I just checked TS%, FG%, and 3%. I'll admit - GP is not as good a shooter as say - John Stockton - but the tradeoff is that GP is a better fit - for my team.

Well I think the original debate was spurned on when I was Payton was not a good outside shooter, which he wasn't. He might be a great fit for your team, he's a heck of a player. Bill Simmons called him 'possibly one of the best two-way guards of the 1990's', and 'the most dominant point guard of the 1990's'.

Great player, just not a great shooter.

I agree - Great player, but a good shooter.

He was a good scorer. I think that's where we're missing a distinction here. Delonte West is probably a better shooter now than Payton ever was (beyond those 21 glorious playoff games), but Payton in his prime was 10x the scorer Delonte West ever will be.

So what is the difference between a good scorer or good shooter? I think that there is a point where the stats can be nuked too much.

And I have to disagree with you on the DWest comparison - wow. I've seen the two shoot with my own eyes - maybe not in person, but on TV and Video.

Overall, though - Great Game and commentary! I love all the picks so far.

In 2000-2001 GP shot the tres at .375 ... that's not too shabby, (Reggie Miller and Ray Allen each had five seasons when they shot the three at a worse percentage), and .317 for his career is far from terrible. I think it's safe to say he could shoot the ball.
