With the first pick in the 6th round, the Memphis Grizzlies select NBA HOFer, former NBA champion as coach and player, former ABA MVP, former announcer, former part owner of the Miami Heat, and the man with the best nickname ever.

F - "The Kangaroo Kid" Billy Cunningham.

I will be selecting the 69-70 season as that was his most complete NBA season.  26.1 ppg, 13.6 rpg, 4.3 apg with top flight defense and a fairly efficient offensive game.  He finished 5th in MVP voting that year and was on the 1st team All NBA.
2023 Historical Draft - Brooklyn Nets - 9th pick

Bigs - Pau, Amar'e, Issel, McGinnis, Roundfield
Wings - Dantley, Bowen, J. Jackson
Guards - Cheeks, Petrovic, Buse, Rip

No doubt.  In fact, I'd say 98.3% of the guys drafted so far will some day end up in the HOF, if they're not there already.

You get that number through your magical basketball computer, John Hollinger?

I divided 59 by 60.
I have that number down at 95%. I got three players drafted not making it with a few other a major injury away from not making it if that injuries ends their career or turns them into Gilbert Arenas quality of basketball player post injury as compared to pre injury.

Wade, CP3, and Deron Williams?
I have Wallace, Motumbo and Mourning not making the Hall and Howard, Wade, Paul and Williams not making it if they have a career ending injury anytime real soon.
I think Wade is in, especially if the Heat win the title this year even if he never plays again.  Basketball reference has him as a lock at #6 of active players in its HOF Monitor stat behind only Kobe, Shaq, Duncan, KG, and Lebron.

I can see why he's a HOF'er, but at 6'6 and playing a lot of his NBA career during the 'dark days' of the mid-70's, I don't know if he's a great pick for this game.

Billy Cunningham was a great player, but I'm a bit surprised if only because I didn't think he was the "type" of player Memphis was going for.

Good choice Moranis, thought about him but my team needs have me going in a different direction.

This has been a pretty hard choice for me between 2 Hall of Famer's and a binkie. Hopefully the binkie will be around in a couple of more rounds.

No player scored more points in the 1980's than his 19,682, he was the first player ever to post eight consecutive 2,000-point seasons, he’s one of the most prolific and seemingly effortless scorers in NBA history. He currently sits at #13 in the all time NBA scorers list with 25,613 points.  A soft spoken man, he will be a perfect fit at the small forward spot in our starting five.

With pick 6.2 the Celtics select:

Alex English

G:Kemba,Payton,Hairston,Henderson,Lin
F:Parker,MKG,Budinger,Mirotic,Salmons
C:R.Lopez,Biyombo,Hickson
Coach: Shaka Smart
Rights to: Bog Bog

Yeah he isn't nearly as athletic as a lot of my guys, but I needed someone like him on the bench.  And frankly I believe he was the best player available in this setting as I firmly believe his 69-70 season was the most complete all around season available to be selected.  He was a very intelligent, hard worker, excellent defender, strong scorer and rebounder, etc.  Exactly what a 6th man should be.  He also found great success on a team with dominant personalities, so I think there really won't be any chemistry issues.

Wow, two curveballs to start the round.  Both were spectacular players, though.  (Just not what I was expecting from either.)

I think he's a solid pick, the biggest negative I see is that at the 3 he's not a proficient 3pt shooter, but he sure can score.

a straight up scoring machine, though he isn't going to be hitting any 3's.  Overall, good quality for the 6th man.

Yeah, you are right. He still makes it. The other guys though, if they get hurt this offseason and never play again, without a ring, no way.

His numbers were also a bit inflated by Denver's pace.  Still, a great player.

sorry.  I think I will continue to do that going forward.  I have a specific bench in mind that is more on line with Cunningham then my starters.

I'm pretty sure I know who you believe should have been taken and considered him, but ultimately felt Cunningham was a more complete player in this exercise.

Well then weren't a lot of guys from the 60's numbers inflated by the pace?

Yep and they were.  Basketball needs a stat like ERA+ so that stats across eras can be measured.
