Those are essentially the Celtics three options this summer.  What would you do?

ALL IN
Essentially the team would make moves that would improve the team short term, but hurt it long term.  The most obvious ideas being floated around would be moving Rondo, LAC #1, and other pieces for Chris Paul regardless of whether or not you convince him to sign an extension.  Other trades I've seen would be Rondo for Nash/Gortat (with other pieces involved).  Trades of that ilk, which essentially have the potential to only help next year (1 year players, older veterans, etc.).  It might also mean the Celtics take some risks on injured players or utilize more then just 1 year free agent contracts to really just go for it i.e. hurt the 2012 free agency picture, but help the team in 2011.

BLOW IT UP
This is fairly straight forward in which the team pretty much puts everyone on the block and looks to rebuild.  This is where KG and Allen's massive expiring contracts could be put to good use.  Potential targets would be OJ Mayo, Rudy Gay, Josh Smith, Brandon Roy, Greg Oden, Deandre Jordan, etc.  It puts the team into rebuilding mode faster with the eye towards the future.

MINOR MOVES ONLY
The Celtics take one more crack at it and only add 1 year players in free agency before looking to the summer of 2012 and the stellar free agent market.  It would take an incredibly amount of luck for the Celtics to be anything other then what they were this year under this method, but it would put them as viable players in 2012 free agency and still give the core of the team one more shot at glory.

Too early to say ... I have yet to see a coherent plan from anyone that significantly enhances the rebuilding process by blowing it up and rebuilding.

If that plan exists, it's worth consideration.

In the meantime, I am in the "minor moves only" camp.

You have to do either All In or begin the process of Blowing It Up, I think.

As Doc acknowledged in an interview today, simply adding a view veteran role players and trying to win again by leaning heavily on the Big 3 as they did this year simply won't work.  The only way this team is going to have a chance at winning a title within the next year or two is if they add young players who can have a very significant impact and take a large portion of the offensive and defensive load away from the Big 3.

I don't know how the Celtics could do it, but that's what would be required for them to really compete.  I think there has to be a decision between really competing next year, or trying to be players in free agency next summer.  I don't really like the idea of a trade for Nash / Gortat (get even older??), but a trade for CP3, Okafor, and perhaps Carl Landry could put us over the top.

The 'minor moves' plan basically amounts to spending a full season and maybe a playoff round or two saying a last goodbye to the Big 3 and Doc, culminating in another frustrating loss to the Heat, Bulls, Knicks etc.

I've made a few proposals that I think could work in that manner, which essentially nets us Chris Paul, Rudy Gay, Andris Biedrins, Marcus Camby, and Martell Webster, coupled with keeping Pierce, Green, West, Davis, and Krstic.  I think that blow it up trade would keep the Celtics in title contention for awhile, the problem is it involved three separate trades two of which had three teams, which makes it beyond highly unlikely.

If there's one thing that I've learned from the last four years, it's that you don't win championships just by having a championship-caliber roster. You also need a fair amount of good luck.

I say add a few more quality rotation players to the core, and then see what kind of luck the team has.

1. keep the core for one more run.
2. try and get a decent starting center via FA/sign and trade/trade.
3. shore up the  bench with a scorer/replacement for BBD/more bigs
4. hope rondo takes the next step to becoming a complete player (i.e. practice jumper/ft's)

Keep it minor.

I think there's actually a small chance this team could be better next year.  Right now, KG, Ray, and Paul really aren't showing any additional signs of slowing down.  If anything they all look better than they did last year.

If Rondo, Green, and West all make improvements and Danny can add a couple more complimentary pieces, I think they could make another run, especially if they only have to play 50 games.

Um . . . did we or did we not just lose a playoff series in 5 games because the team broke down in 4 out of 5 fourth quarters, turning the ball over and missing a lot of jumpshots because they had nothing left?

Um...and didn't we lose two of those games with Rondo playing with one arm and actually hurting the team by being on the court?

I dot see a reason to give up "the big 4". The only need that we have is to find adequate alternatives able to fully replece part time KG, RY and PP beacuse they old now.

I guess it starts with is kg retiring? I assume shaq is  but KG is going to decide what movement happens
we have a good starting center in jermaine signed for next year, paul and rondo are here, ray has a players option
I'd love to have PP move to manu "sub" role, resign green and start him, miss him but trade ray for a young athlete, i'd like (healthy) delonte back for sure
I  guess its minor moves for me

I'm of the opinion we would have lost anyway.

Glen Davis' minutes need to be given to Jeff Green. (It's amazing to me that every Glen Davis post up WASNT a Jeff Green post up).

Drafting an athletic wing. Someone needs to play some SG/SF, he doesn't need to be a star but he needs to play (Bill Walker or Tony Allen would have been nice, preferably TA)

Development of Avery Bradley. Delonte West may have played himself out of a role in Boston, he was only a minimum contract guy last offseason and if he wants more he probably won't be able to stay.

Signing players that can run with Rondo (or without him). Outside of RR, The Celtics are pretty bad in the open court. These playoffs have seen Ray Allen just fail miserably in the fast break, KG and Paul are starting to slow down and are usually too spent to really run the floor for easy transition offense.

Finding a Center. It's yet to be seen whether or not J.O. or Shaq will be returning, but either way Boston needs somebody that can both play effective minutes and stay healthy. (this could be a transition solution in order to draw Dwight Howard to Boston in 2012.)
