I'm not giving up hope by any means, but it's very clear that this current roster is unsure of itself, specifically between the bench and starters.  I hate harping on the trade again, but one of the things I always believed is that this Big 3 era would set the blueprint going forward.

I know some of you wont agree with me, but I believe keeping Perkins in the long term would have been the best move for the future, as well as the present.  If you look at last years team you truly got the sense that these guys would run through a wall for each other, especially when the playoffs began.  Our mental toughness and ability to intimidate opponents basically carried us to the finals last year.  For opposing teams it truly didn't matter who we had on the floor(except for the Lakers series) because they knew that they were going to face the most mentally tough team in the league.  Over the course of 7 games it became such a mental grind against us.  We ALWAYS had the edge over every other team in that department.  The Lakers were only able to handle it because they had the perfect blend of talent and were simply too confident to be shaken.

Then of course there's the 2009 Celtics, which always reminds me of Celtics pride at its finest.  I remember being upset about KG's injury in between playoff games; but as soon as the Celtics took the court you could see the look in their eyes.  Even with the injuries to KG and Powe, as well as a beat up Ray and Paul, their grit and toughness almost carried them to the Eastern Conference Finals.  I know many of you look back at the year and believe we were robbed(which I tend to agree with), but I choose to view that season with pride.

Anyways, I know I kind of strayed off-topic, but I really believe the priority going forward should have been about bringing the toughest and most mentally resilient players together.  I'm not denying that talent is most important, but the Celtics have proven that this strategy can bring the strength's out of every player on the team.

Let's be real here, if you look at the title winners over the past 15 years, most of them were simply fortunate enough to have the most dominant/best player in the game.  Tim Duncan, Shaq, and Kobe have accounted for ten titles since 1999.

However, I believe the Pistons of 2004 truly stand as an example of the way a team should be built, unless you are able to acquire the most dominant player in the game.  Acquring a player like that is entirely unpredictable though, especially in our market.  The Lakers will always have the edge as a more desirable team for superstar free agents, and nothing like the situation in Miami has been done before.  Our big 3 came together very differently than theirs.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there speculation that Doc was interested in rebuilding through Rondo?  If that's the case, I really wish we had tried to use our current success as the blueprint for the future. The Jeff Green's of the world can certainly be valuable, but I want a team full of players that are relentless.  The combination of Rondo and Perk, as well as an aging  Big 3, could have helped facilitate this transitation without the Celtics losing their identity.

We all know that there is going to be a significant transition period, but wouldn't you feel much more comfortable with a roster that prides itself on defense and mental toughness?  I want the Celtics to be the team that opponents hate to play, simply because they know they will be in for a long night regardless of whether or not they are more talented than us.

Im not so sure the Big 3 are what made this team so tough, though.  Most talented, obviously.  But we lost a lot of our toughness when Tony Allen left, and we seem to have lost the remainder of it with Kendrick Perkins.

I just don't see the toughness.  It's not in their body language, it's not in their play...and it sure as hell wasn't in an imaginary "Switch"

Not saying they did, and I completely agree about Tony and Perk.  Guys like Tony Allen, Leon Powe(I don't blame Danny for this because of the injury), and Perkins are so valuable when it comes to building a title contender.  KG certainly brought the attitude and mental toughness, and I believe Doc is such a great motivator that he's been able to get the most out of all these guys.

Btw, I don't want people to think I'm bashing Jeff Green based on my last post.  He simply got handed way too much responsibility and it's not his natural instinct to be an aggressor.  He's the type of player that would have needed a full training camp with the current group.  Big Baby is very much the same way.  The team made him work his a** off, and he eventually bought into the system and became a tough player.  Unfortunately, it seems like some of that has diminished over the past few months.

I guess we are seeing what the true effects of free agency and the luxery tax can do to "redistrubute" (more likely concentrate) wealth of talent in this NBA. I would have rather ridden this season out with Perkins and O'Neal splitting the Centre duties than sending out an undersized, relatively unathletic, exhausted PF in Glen Davis for 35 minutes a night. In the end, the Lebron+Wade+Bosh+3pointshootingrole players might have won out but in the ECF rather than in the 2nd round with HCA over the Celtics.

Then after the year we probably lose Perkins, Glen Davis, and a host of others to FA. But we would probably have 3 trips to the NBA finals and possibly 2 championships to show for our efforts.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

Rondo didn't seem to mentally tough in Game 2.

He wasn't really "participating" in team huddles and timeouts.

I know he is hurting so I can cut him some slack.

Yeah, it's certainly an issue that we still don't know what to expect from him.  His track record up until now is still superb, especially in the playoffs.  The 2009 post-season, as well as most of the playoffs last year, show that Rondo has the mentality to lead a team when needed.  He still had some difficult moments in the playoffs last year, but the rest of our team was much better prepared to handle it.  Rondo's play essentially makes or breaks our team now, whereas it used to put us over the top.  The thing that worries me about Rondo is that he tends to lose his composure when the circumstances around him aren't ideal(Perkins departure, chemistry issues etc.)

I think getting shaq back for Game 3  would do alot to the mental toughness of this group...even if not production wise, just motivation wise....we saw when JO came back and was productive against the Knicks, it motivated the celtics to play harder...

Was he "participating" in all the huddles vs the Cavs last year?

If Shaq comes back, even in limited minutes, and we manage to win a hard fought game, then I think it could really turn this around.  Shaq is essential from a mental standpoint because this team has had nothing but success against Miami with him on the court.

A win with Shaq on the court would go a long way towards bringing the swagger back.  All of sudden there's more life in our legs, we execute with more authority, and even open shots begin to fall.

Right now the Heat are able to go out and play basketball without thinking.  I'm not saying a win with Shaq would put doubt into them, but the more they think, the better chance we have at coming back.  Shaq could potentially give us that mental egde back, but I'm certainly not counting on it.

This team is gonna serve home court (with or without Shaquille O Neal) ... I don't care what anybody says. Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, and Paul Pierce will not let the big 3 era end this way. We're getting these two at home ... and we're hitting RESTART. Watch out.  >:(
