I'll buy that. Tony Allen's defense is very much missed on Wade. His speed is missed in general. Miami is exposing the Celtics as a slow team.

but I don't think Allen was particularly keep-able. The Celtics and the Grizzlies put the same offer on the table pretty much. ...and he chose to leave because he was frustrated as a back up here.

Its too bad.  :-\

.....we would have wanted him to be part of some sort of trade during the season....like most seasons. Definitely could use him now though.
We all think we know more than we really do....

Probably true.  If we re-sign Tony, it's not a huge deal when Marquis gets hurt, and there's no reason to move Perk.  We go into the playoffs with Perk + Tony, and our defense, intensity, rebounding, and intimidation are all improved.  We'd still have our swagger.

I wasn't particularly sorry to see Tony go, but there's no doubt that he'd help this team right now.

Danny has said that money wasn't the issue.  However, Tony seems to disagree:

Quote
Allen is still surprised the Celtics let him leave for the Memphis Grizzlies. . . . His agent Derrick Powell negotiated him a three-year, $9.5 million contract, and tried to get the Celtics to match and keep him. When pressed for a rapid response, Celtics general manager Danny Ainge declined to match the offer and Allen’s heart crumbled.

“I didn’t think there was even going to be a negotiation with Boston,” Allen told Yahoo! Sports this week. “I didn’t think there would need to be a recruiting process. I just thought it would get done.”

Link.

That makes it sound like Tony gave the Celts the chance to match, and Danny turned it down.

you think. Starting Unit stays intact. Tony Allen 15-20minutes off the bench, Move JO to the bench, Baby plays his natural position with limited minutes

I wasn't particularly sorry to see Tony go. I'm still not.

What disappointed me at the time was that Ainge didn't get a chip back: a sign and trade to net a pick or player, or at least a contract that could have been used in a later trade, could have really helped.

I think Danny tried that, but Ronnie Brewer decided to sign with Chicago instead.  There was nobody else on the Memphis roster that 1) we had interest in, 2) Memphis found expendable, and 3) matched salary-wise.

Yup, this is why Unrestricted Free Agency is so dicey for the team giving up the player. More often then not you will get nothing in return for a role player.

It was the fully-guaranteed third year. He's 29 now. I think Ainge figured Allen was another James Posey situation.

IIRC, the Brewer signing happened several days after Allen was rumored to be headed to Memphis. For all the comments coming from Brewer's camp, I thought a S&T would get done.

Oh wow. Thanks for the correction. I missed that info.

I thought Tony wanted out.  :-[

Hmmm, hard to make a fair call on how i would have felt last summer with this info, in hindsight. But the C's should have matched. Tony's stock was pretty high as a defensive specialist and i have to think that he'd be movable in that 3rd year if necessary.

Crap... I didn't know that he wanted to stay...

... Then HE would have been getting abused by Lebron and Wade. TA has played pretty well in Memphis. Good for him. He cashed in as well he should have. He wouldn't have really made a difference to us though. It's funny how his huge weaknesses get quickly forgotten when he is no longer on our squad. He gave up as much as he gave us. Often much more. One out of 5 games he was great. The other 4 he was awful.

The reason that DA couldn't get anything for him in return was that the guy felt slighted by the Celtics and so wasn't in any mood to help us out.

[dang], that quote really hurts my heart.  He wanted to be hear, be a Celtic.

Moving him and Perk changed this team's entire identity.  Just look at what he's done for Memphis' defense off the bench.  It's incredible

Yeah.  Like I mentioned, I never loved Tony much when he was here.  When Danny said "it wasn't about the money", and Tony came out and said he wanted more of the spotlight, I took that to mean that Tony ditched us.

To hear that he would have gladly signed here for the same contract, and that he truly was a Celtic at heart kind of stings.  I can't be a total hypocrite and fault Danny too much for passing on Tony, but in hindsight, it hurts.  Tony would have been a huge help this season, and he most likely would have kept Perk in green.
