Now this is a topic that could be held off discussing for say.... a year and a month or so. But with Harrison Barnes, along with prospects like Jared Sullinger, Perry Jones, Tristan Thompson and John Henson, returning for another year of college. It's something we need to keep on our radar.

The Celtics of course have the Clipper's first round draft pick in next years draft. It's Top Ten Protect (through 2016) so ideally, the clippers would finish next year at the very back end of the lottery and the Celtic's would reap the rewards.

I've heard that next years draft is deeper then in previous years, and with so many pro-prospects returning to school (presumably due to the impending lockout) who knows how deep it could end up being.

Prospects Brandon Knight and Terrence Jones of Kentucky are yet to announce their plans.

Yup - we probably won't have a shot at most of the guys on that list, but they might push what would've been top-5 picks down to where we could be.  Deep deep draft next year like a lot of people predicted.

Now the Clips just have to live up to their end by getting a pick from 11-14...

Do you think the clipper's core, as constituted, is capable of doing that?

One other factor to consider is the new CBA.  I know that some are projecting a new 20 year old age minimum / two years in college, which would mean that some players (for instance, Austin Rivers) wouldn't be in next year's draft.

If they instituted that rule, wouldn't they put a delay on it....like starting in 2014 or whatever.....or would there be no reason to wait.  I thought they might wait I guess just so they don't spring it on the current crop so suddenly.

Ugh.  That would be an awful rule.

I'd say so.  Huge strides this year made by Eric Gordon, Blake Griffin, and Deandre Jordan.  If they can get full healthy seasons out of Gordon and Kaman, and build stronger chemistry with Mo Williams (who I find a much better fit than Baron), I'd say with 100% confidence that they improve upon their 32 game win total.  We only need them to not be one of the 10 worst teams in the NBA.  They were the 8th worst last year and I expect improvement.

No idea.  The article I read talked specifically about it affecting Rivers' situation, but they could delay it if they wanted:

We probably won't get any of those top freshman returning.  Perry Jones is a possibility if his stock continues to drop, but if that's the case would we want him?  Imagine a draft though where we could get Jeremy Lamb at 11 to replace Ray Allen then a guy like Tyler Zeller late in the first round?  Say what you want about the Perkins trade, but this pick could help extend the window.

I was referring more to the trickle down effect it could have on the entire draft next year.

Barnes, Jones, Sullinger and Knight could all go in the top 5 next year, when no one expected them to even be in it. Next years draft class was so supposed to be a strong one even without them involved.

I just thought of a very interesting CBA idea.  What about not mandating a 20 year old age minimum, but instead having different pay scales depending on how many years in college the draftee stayed.  Something to the extent of a 25% bigger contract per year stayed in college.

No NBA/NCAA representative would go for this, as it brings the whole "college players being paid to play" issue into view.  The only way they were able to get the 1 year after HS requirement, was trying to place themselves on moral high ground, and saying they were doing it to protect the kids.

Think it's been asked before but I'm wondering about the draft order if there's no season...?

I don't think it's equivalent to "paying college players to play amateur sports".  It's more similar to how any other business works.  The more education you have = the more money you start making at that job.

Upon rethinking this, the problem I foresee is that teams would then start drafting younger players over equal older players because they can at lower cost.  But I think the older players wouldn't slide so far that the higher raise wouldn't offset that.
