on inside the nba barkley said JO trained with some well respected trainer and lost alotta weight.

Yeah, he trained with Tim Grover in Chicago (at his own expense according to Ainge).  Grover is considered by many as the best in the business, and he generally trains most of the top draft prospects, and many of the top players in the NBA over the summer.

Every year there are stories about his workouts near the draft.  Chad Ford in particular talks about him a lot.

The fact that he decided to put his own money on the table and go to rehab with Grover says a lot about his determination to come back strong.

As for Shaq, its a completely different situation.  He is not rehabbing from a surgery, he is waiting for an achilles injury to heal.  Going to a guy like Grover would do nothing for him.  He is just an old guy carrying one of the biggest frames the NBA has ever seen.  He just needs some luck.

From Wojnarowski's pretty encouraging piece on last night's win:

Quote
And yet Jermaine O’Neal traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation with trainer Tim Grover and quickly Grover could see that O’Neal was desperate to get back to Boston and chase a championship. “Every day for three weeks, two times a day,” Grover said by phone Sunday night. “I had to slow him down. All he did was show up, listen and work hard.”

+1 for that quote, which underscores JO's desire to win a championship and help this team in any way he can. JO, in his postgame interview on NBAtv talked about the encouragement he's received by both his teammates and Cs fans in the area, who are always saying kind words to him.

Many on here who hate the trade go so far as to question his heart and always point to last year's playoffs as proof. He had BOTH an injured ankle and knee in that series.

Those who question the trade are justified in not believing in his health until he continues to show them. They are not, however, justified in questioning his heart. He wants a championship so bad he can taste it and has said as much, and his commitment to his rehab has shown it.

Tim Grover, a very well-respected basketball trainer.

Perk is still my favorite Celtic of the last 20 years.  But JON is a six-time All-Star, at 32 still in his prime, who post-surgery is healthier than he's been in a couple of years.

Perk has not been in his class as a player (or, of course, Shaq's in Shaq's prime).  Danny had had enough with the Mikki Moores and Sheldon Williamses of the world, wasn't counting on Perk coming back healthy enough this year, and he did take a 'gamble' on two higher-quality players.

Actually, I'd argue Shaq was a gamble, JON was a high-probability move.  That JON had more trouble before finally opting for surgery made it look otherwise, but the team we see now was Danny's original vision:  The plan had been for JON to anchor that spot for them this year, with Shaq being the gamble to add spot minutes.

Sure, he might have done things differently if he'd ended up with TA and a healthy MD on the team, but IMO he correctly calculated that only having Sasha (or the equivalent) backing up Pierce wouldn't have been enough to get by the likes of Miami.

He was very good with Indiana, his career got derailed by the fight in Detroit and more injuries. He's a very nice compliment to the other starters on both ends.

I remain concerned that he can play through 4 series, but the playoff schedule should be his friend. Based on Baby's play of late (and I've never been a fan, so take this with a grain of salt) - would you play a rotation of:

Shaq / JO at C
KG / Kristic at PF

If everyone was healthy? With JO and KG getting "starters" minutes?

I don't think Krstic is mobil enough to defend PFs, and he's impressed me less than BBD has.  I think a "healthy" rotation would be Shaq / JO (with Shaq starting and JO getting more minutes), and KG / BBD.

No way.  I haven't been a huge fan of Davis' play of late either (although I think he did a good job defensively last night), but he is a much better fit at PF than Krstic.

Davis' biggest problem is that he has been playing too many minutes of late, which has made him pace himself more, and turn from an energy guy to basically a jumpshooter.  However, if they can get him back down to 15-20 minutes per game, he can be a very effective player, throwing his weight around, rotating on defense, and scoring the occasional bucket.

I hear what you are saying but and I agree on the big picture but in this series...

BBD should never evah evah evah...evah check Amare.  It is like watching a fat man @ the buffet.

Unless Doc's plan is "Baby we know you cant stick him so just stay out there do the best you can so KG doesn't foul out"?

Baby played good defense on Amare.  It was on KG that Amare displayed his vicious dunks.

Oh, and JO was a beast last night. 8)

definitely an awesome game from JO! the only thing that has been bugging me about his game is his hands on offense, i feel like i saw him drop at least 3 or 4 passes last night.. other than that awesome job!

I've been loving what J O'Neal has given since returning from his injury. Last night, during that intense 3rd quarter push, he was truly great - sending shots back, hustling, hitting all shots.

We're gonna need more of that big guy. Keep it up! Go Celtics!!
