Just saw the ESPN article regarding their picks for the season awards : They picked Griffin (unanimously) as ROY, Kevin Love as MIP, Thibs for COTY,  Rose for MVP, Odo as Sixth man and Dwight Howard as Defensive Player of the Year.. http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?page=DPOY-2011

What surprised me was that Howard got 33 votes, Keith Bogans 1 and Grant Hill 1.. I'm like, WHAT? NO KG?

I'm not saying our boy KG hands down is the best Defensive player this season, what with the injuries and our recent struggles, but at least he deserves some consideration!
And I'm not just saying this because I'm a KG and Celtics fan.
After Thibs and Perk left, KG has been the sole anchor of our defense . I don't have the numbers but He's one of the top defensive rebounding players this year and he's also added some blocks and steals along with them boards. And the Celtics have remained one of the best (if not the best) defensive teams in the league, even if our # 5 slot has been like a revolving door all season. Kevin Garnett has been consistently efficient especially on the defensive end all season long and to see Keith Bogans(Dr. Jack Ramsay) and Grant Hill(Jon Barry) picked by these so-called experts ahead of him is not  just a travesty, it's a BIG.BAD.JOKE!

wow grant hill gets a vote and KG doesnt? What a joke. KG should have at least been close to getting it this year. His blocks are down a bit from 08, but besides that he's the same guy still on the best defensive team in the league just like when he got it in 08. Not one vote?? This is bogus to me

Raynman - you have a point, and to help solidify how important Kevin Garnett is to Boston overall, I would check out drza44's well-written article over on the blog main page in the Fanposts section titled "Realistic Optimism Part I - KG and Pierce."

In my minds eye, every since last summer, it seems as though the call has been for a Lakers-MIA NBA Finals. Of course, after Boston owned MIA during the regular season, that talk (thankfully) died down. We were legitimately looked at as contenders.

Well, it unfortunately resurfaced back on Sunday, to me. Once we lost to MIA, now all of a sudden the "pundits" are mentioning CHI or MIA to challenge LA.

In some respects, I can't blame them. Boston has in fact been erratic the last few weeks.

But - getting to Raynman's point here - his post just reflects, to me, the disrespect towards The Celtics. To not even mention KG in the Defensive Player of the Year running is definitely wrong, by ESPN. Sure - Boston has been erratic lately. But even with that, Boston still has 56 wins this season.

So...the list that Raynman mentioned...Dwight - sure he's got it. I'd strongly consider him for MVP, too.

Now - Keith Bogans? Not sure about that one. Keith is a tough defender, but I think his nod points to the fact the CHI overall is winning. Now, I bet that if CHI had 50 or less wins, he wouldn't be on the list.

Grant Hill? Look I love the guy, as a player and person. But I'm sure if you asked him he'd probably say that KG should be on the list. I know that Grant has done an admirable job for PHX this year, but....

Now - a case for KG? I'd look no further than four games - the two Portland and LA Clips games. KG basically held in check two of the most potent PF's in the game right now in LaMarcus Aldridge and Blake Griffin. Just controlled those two.

I don't have access to a lot of stats, but I bet if folks plugged KG into any of these fancy computer programs that run defensive efficiency, I bet Kevin Garnett would be on the lists.

Another way to look at this is that KG has already won the awards, the accolades...he has a ring, with another one coming. He won Defensive Player in 07-08. He's won All-Star MVP. He's won regular season MVP. He definitely has won some awards in his career.

Grant? He - as well as Bogans - deserves some recongnition. That is how it is sometimes - spread the wealth of recognition. I think us Celtics Fans want our players to get the accolades they deserve, but at this point KG (and Paul, Ray, Rajon, etc) want one thing - to be playing in June and hoisting that Banner 18.

And they have a great shot at doing just that.

Come June of this year, this ranking won't even matter.

lol...I love your candor here on the Blog (TP).

But I think those bozos do carry some weight. ESPN is the hub of sports, I believe.

Dwight Howard will win DPOY (which he should) but KG should finish 2nd or 3rd imo. Grant Hill deserves a lot of credit too.

I'm not sure why Ramsay voted for Bogans as DPOY...that one realy confused me.

KG would win it if Howard won MVP.  But Rose will win MVP, Howard will get DPOY, and KG will get a few consolatory votes.

In truth, KG is probably the best individual and team defender in the league.  He's the best defender on the best defensive team in the league, and this team is bad on defense without him.  Tony Allen would also have a serious case to make for DPOY if he had played starter minutes for the whole season.

Howard is definitely a fine choice for DPOY, though.

KG does have a rock solid case. I think it's a toss up that probably has to go to Dwight by virtue of what the eyes tell us and the fact that Dwight has played 700 more minutes this season than KG.

The one thing that doesn't look right is that the Magic aren't that much worse defensively(2.76 pp100 possessions) with Dwight out of the game. And that's with poor defensive backups at C for most of the season(Gortat only played 400 mins for Orl). Dwight has played 75% of the Magic's minutes, though.

If Howard gets the DPOY as consolation for not getting the MVP and KG's consolation for losing out on DPOY is the Finals MVP, then I'm fine with that  ;D

Man - I could live with that, too.

Howard 'ain't bad by any means, but I think he's massively overrated on defense. He gets a lot of attention because of his weak side blocks, but as an actual defender, I'm not crazy about him. Mind you, he's still great (and will win DPOY) just due to his insane athletic ability, but I think Dwight's quite a bit overrated on the defensive side.

True those guys really know their basketball. Colin Cowherd, Rob Parker, Jon Barry, Chris Broussard, Steven A Smith, lol no but for real they do pretty much run sportsmedia. But i'd say they're much better at football than they are at basketball. Obviously there's some respectable opinions over there for sure. Knowledgeable guys like Wilbon, Legler, and Bayless (sometimes), but there are alotta people over there who make me cringe when they talk bball.

Keith Bogans hahahaha.
Yeah, he's the sole reason why the Bulls are no.1!
He makes Derrick Rose look good and he makes Thibs look like a genius!    :D
