I've seen the stats posted here (I forget who posted them) on KG's statistical impact on our defense. Look at the 9 games he missed compared to the defense before & after and you'll see tangible evidence of his impact. I believe Howard deserves it a little less this season than the last 2 due to his team's lack of "eliteness" on the defensive end but all in all he still deserves to win. (With KG being 2nd over overrated SG's)

Look at Orlando's roster.  The fact that that team is any good at defense at all is a testament to the incredible impact Howard has on that end.

I would like to say yes, but have been a bit underwhelmed in his 2nd half of the season defense. Though he has been better as of late.

No, he doesn't get enough flashy blocks.

KG would win it if Howard won MVP.  But Rose will win MVP, Howard will get DPOY, and KG will get a few consolatory votes.

In truth, KG is probably the best individual and team defender in the league.  He's the best defender on the best defensive team in the league, and this team is bad on defense without him.  Tony Allen would also have a serious case to make for DPOY if he had played starter minutes for the whole season.

Howard is definitely a fine choice for DPOY, though.

Hakeem won both DPOY and MVP in 1994, so I don't think that's necessarily true.  I think KG's defense has been very much under the radar this season and Dwight would win it no matter if he won MVP or not just based on his defensive reputation.

probably already said.. but no..since Dwight didnt get the MVP (pretty much) he is definitely getting DPOY. thats how the league works now for these consolation prizes.

KG seems to have lost a lot of respect around the league this year, a reflection of his loss of stature.

Imagine him being called out by Villanueva and some young punk kid like Noah when he was in his prime...

No, KG's days of individual accolades are over, folks.

the team's slump in the 2nd half of season will not allow him to be considered.

Howard 'ain't bad by any means, but I think he's massively overrated on defense. He gets a lot of attention because of his weak side blocks, but as an actual defender, I'm not crazy about him. Mind you, he's still great (and will win DPOY) just due to his insane athletic ability, but I think Dwight's quite a bit overrated on the defensive side.

This is wisdom.

Remember in the O'Bie system:  weakside help from bigs was critical, and led to some big block numbers from otherwise average players (e.g. Blount).

i disagree with this sentiment. i think you're talking more about Chris Andersen rather than Dwight Howard. Dwight blocks a lot of shots and alters even more shots and he gets a ton of defensive (and offensive) rebounds. He's got great timing and he cleans up the mistakes of his perimeter defenders and he can hold his own in the post (in the event that he does go up against a post player which is pretty rare these days).

KG can defend more positions and he can stuff any opponent's PnR game, but Dwight is a fine, fine choice for DPOY. in the end, his popularity will make him win the award over KG, but by no means is he "massively overrated" or undeserving of the award. He's pretty dang good on D.

i'm not suggesting dwight won't win the award. i think he probably deserves it. i just think he's pretty overrated. people talk about him as if he's one of the great defensive centers. that is ridiculous. yes, he blocks shots and gets boards, but his defense is primarily from his huge athletic and size advantage on pretty much anyone he plays. not his fault, of course (he plays in an era without real bigs), but i really get annoyed by all the talk about how dwight is this incredible defensive player. he's good, but he shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath as some of the other great all-time defensive centers.

also cus I think KG defends the pick and roll and jumps out to other positions better and more frequently than howard does. He also communicates with everyone keeping it all together on defense in a way Dwight does not do. He's more about hanging back and being the last line of defense they funnel players to so he gets blocks. Two different types of defense but I think KG's translates more into making a defensively dominant team.

I think KG merits serious consideration but the C's are known for their team defense so I think that takes away from him in the eyes of the voters.  He also doesn't pile up the showy stats like blocks and steals as some others that get lots of votes do.
