I'm using 90 as a magic number. Above is a list of games where we scored under 90 during our recent down stretch; win or loss; most of them being losses. There are a few game were we broke 90 and still lost, but there were some extreme point swings in those games.
Basically this team can't score. For a team that takes so much pride in defense, if you only allow 85 points in a game ( which is great and far and a way better than the #1 ranked defense); but can only score 79 you still lose.
What we've seen:
*Rondo assist numbers way down.
*Ray, Paul, KG, BBD all having miserable shooting nights (probably helps attribute to the former).
*Ray not getting many shots at all; he's the team's second leading scorer; and we have a great record when he gets over 18.
*More bad turnovers than usual. An inexplicable number of lazy passes, passes way out of reach or out of bounds, home run passes into turnovers.
*No points from the bench. BBD is our most reliable bench scorer and he seems to be struggling since return from injury.
*Do you ever recall a stretch where there have been so many 24 second clock violations or forced shots?
I'm not even going to mention rebounding because let's face it, that's been a weakness of ours for the past 3 years; it's not something unusual for this team.
So what is going on? I think teams are:
-playing off Rondo
-doubling Ray
-playing for the pass
Rondo has been taking more jumpers lately because teams are inviting him to; there isn't a person within 5 feet of him for most of his jumpers.
Without a defender glued to Rondo, they can afford to double and trap Ray. Remember all those post game interviews where Doc says he's amazed at how open Ray is; maybe other teams finally listened.
Just in general a player off Rondo clogs up all the passing lanes.
BOS likes to move the ball on offense; they don't play isolation basketball. Perhaps teams are just playing for the pass especially early in the shot clock and when the player is not in a good shooting area. This would explain a lot of bad turnovers where it look like a BOS player is simply handing the ball to the other team.
