had this debate with a few friends, so I was just wondering what you guys think? having read most of the trade threads it seems the people who are in favor of it (like me) argued that our biggest need was a backup for pierce. so if daniels didnt get hurt, do you think danny would have pulled the trigger on the trade?

Its an interesting question.  I think there is a very good chance it would have.  I think the combination of Danny not being a huge fan of Perk's game, and OKC bowling him over with the offer would have made it happen, even with Daniels healthy.

Sometime in Jan or early Feb Danny said he liked the team as constructed and wasn't expecting to be active during the trade deadline.  Then Daniels went down and it really changed everything.  I guess it's a matter of whether you believe Danny or not.

Aside from the Marquis injury, reasons for the C's to move Perk:

-They know they can't sign him long term.

-They had an impressive record without him all year; proving he's not a "critical" piece to the team.

-They got by far the best player in the deal; JG.

So aside from the MD injury there were still several credible reasons to make the Perk deal.

Here's what Danny said on this subject at the time of the trade:

Quote
On if any of the would have happened if Daniels wouldn't have gotten injured:

"I felt like our team was going good, playing very well. Marquis’ versatility. But I guess once we started looking for those wing players, I guess it did change a little bit. All the injuries we had. I think injuries have played a part in what we’ve tried to do to prepare us for this postseason."

Link.

I don't think Danny would have made the trade with a healthy Marquis, because there would have been no need to tamper with something that wasn't broken.

I think it still would have happened. I know Danny and Doc would be foaming at the mouth knowing they have two potent wing players off the bench in Daniels and Green

Imho, no way this trade is made with Daniels healthy. It was about getting help at the three after he went down. Even with Perks contract issues I don't think they were looking to do this.

No, I don't think it would've happened. I can see no reason for them doing it if we still had Daniels.

No, Ainge's hesitation when asked that question was pretty self-explanatory. I don't think the trade happens if TA had re-signed either.

I think he would of done it no questions asked.  He got the best player of the trade (Green), and acquired a 1st round pick for the future to boot.

In my mind, the key for him was Shaq, not Marquis.  He knew Shaq could handle the starting role at Center, with J.O. and Krstic behind him. Shaq proved it to him while Perk was out.

I honestly cannot say.  Only Danny knows the answer to this and I'm not even sure he knows what he would have done.

I don't think you can say the C's got "by far" the best player in the deal.

What makes Jeff Green so good besides being drafted 5th? I just don't see it. I want to see it. I want him to be the best player in the deal. But, frankly, he's not good at much. He's been an increasingly poor shooter and rebounder and an ok defender. Since coming to boston he's shooting better (good!) but his rebounding has become truly pitiful for a 3/4 swing. And, according to his agent, he wants to get paid based on his 5th draft pick pedigree, not "potential 6th man/rotation glue guy" pedigree.

Frankly, right now Perkins is the best/most valuable player in the trade. I hope that "1st rounder from LAC" supplants him, but until then...

Maybe, but probably not during the season.  Marquis and Von were our backup wing plan going into the season, and I think we'd've stuck with it if we could.

I do think there's a strong chance we would have sign-and-traded Perk this offseason regardless.

The best player sure. The best player for our team if we still had Daniels? I don't think so.

And we've got no idea if we'll keep Green in the end.

Green's shooting has been good. Other than that, however, he may be the nost passive player in the history of the NBA. Looks like he is afraid to be on the court.

Yea, he's not bad. But I don't get the Green love around this place. I just don't see it.
