I have been disappointed in the lack of playing time for Troy Murphy since joining the club. I think it's been a wasted opportunity.

114 minutes in 11 games. Only four games where he got double digit minutes.

For a guy who has been sitting out most of the season ... that simply wasn't enough of an opportunity ... for a player who has shown a capacity to be a useful contributor in the past.

A wasted opportunity.

A wasted opportunity.

Could the other alternative be that he's just cooked, at least for this season?  I'm assuming Doc sees him in practice every day, and doesn't think he's capable of contributing.

I'm disappointed, too, but there were some rumbles out of NJ that he just wasn't good enough to be in their rotation.  I found that hard to believe, and like most folks, chalked it up to personality issues.  Could it be that Murphy's injuries have taken a greater toll than many anticipated?

LOL

Honestly (or sadly?), this is nothing really. I mean the guy is averaging 10 minutes a game and has only scored 25 points in the 11 he played in.

His only decent game came against the Bucks where he had 12/7 in 17 minutes. Other than that he's been pretty useless.

It could be ... but I would have liked to have seen him get enough court time to find out.

Shooters need playing time. You can't give them 4-5 minutes and expect them to produce (with any consistency). Especially not players who are used to more playing time and being able to play themselves into a rhythm.

I'm disappointed, too, but there were some rumbles out of NJ that he just wasn't good enough to be in their rotation.  I found that hard to believe, and like most folks, chalked it up to personality issues.  Could it be that Murphy's injuries have taken a greater toll than many anticipated?
I don't believe those reports either.

I do think the reason T.Murphy didn't play in NJ was talent related though. Not due to a decline in ability but because he was worse defensive player than Humphries + because NJ wanted to give Favors minutes which limited the opportunities for Murphy in NJ. I don't think he was ever an Avery Johnson type of player. Which is fine.

Normally speaking, those same limitations could easily see him pinned to the bench here in Boston (which I'd be fine with) ... but considering how short-handed the team has been up front over the past few weeks ... I think he should have been in the team.

With the priority being learning the plays and developing some on-court chemistry/understanding with the rest of the team ... in case the team needs to call upon him during the playoffs.

Playoffs ... Whether it was because he earned that fourth big man slot (due to a strong performance with his playing time) or because the team was short-handed in the playoffs and had to play him out of necessity (injury prone big men).

Hate to kick a guy when he's down, but I'll at least take the boots off.  Maybe it was a personality issue.  When Avery Johnson said he wasn't in game shape after coming back from an injury, instead of working his butt off to get back in the rotation, Troy pouted and publicly complained about his coach.

He hasn't exactly looked like he's busting it with the Cs either.

Curly, who mind you had been collecting his fair share of splinters in OKC, by contrast, came in and really worked his tail off to try to contribute to this team when called upon.

Murphy had a couple of opportunities, but simply didn't do anything with them.  I kind of hope he doesn't come back before either of the O'Neals so we can just take him out of the equation all together which is where he should be.

Oh well, so much for taking the boots off.

This is going to completely change Doc's game plan and player rotation...

Or it could have zero impact on any of that..

Right now, even with two healthy O'Neals, Murphy would probably still be the team's best rebounding big man, behind Garnett.  If he could regain some of his shot hit a three in the 30-35% range, which would still be well below his career mark, and could avoid sucking on defense, he would be a perfectly adequate reserve.  (I actually think he's more likely to shoot better than to rise to mediocrity on defense.)  If Murphy were shooting better, you might be able to put him on the floor at the same time as Glen Davis to cover for Big Baby's rebounding inadequacies and force BBD to play closer to the basket.
