I can GUARANTEE you that you'd think that Rondo was a way better player than Mo Williams if Mo was on this team and RR was on another team. The grass is always greener.

This is getting ridiculous...we get it, you think the guy is trash and that Mo Williams is a better player.

I didn't get to watch the game this evening - just the box score, so i'm guessing this thread is reactionary to Mo Williams' night?

Anyhoo - Rondo still had 12 pts, 9 assists (only 2 TO's), 7 boards, and 3 steals tonight... If this is his production on a bad night, I'll happily take the bad with the good.

I don't agree that Rondo is overrated, but he didn't do anything until the Celtics were down 20.  He got all that the second half.

He's not overrated, but he sure can be frustrating as heck sometimes.  Terrible game for him, I don't care what the numbers say.

Yuck.

Rondo is the best defensive point guard in the leauge. That is what is important.

How so?

Whoever hes guarding usually has big games. He also rarely can stay in front of his man.

Rondo gambles too much for the steal which usually allows his man blow by him for the layup. And he has to understand that he can't rely on his speed going under picks which allows shooters like mo williams knock down threes.

deflecting passes, stealing passes, he does stay in front of his man (genrally. not so much tonight) ill agree he gambles can be inconsistant. But for the most part he is exeptional. Great quickness and length. and who would be a better defensive point guard? dont tell me rose paul or williams because they are not better.

Its crazy to see how quick fans turn on players on a bad night. a couple of weeks ago everyone was turning on kg too.

Against Steve Nash a lot of excuses where thrown around here. Jennings went off on him and we still won the game so it wasn't worth getting real with Rondo. When Rose made the starting 5 in all star game, we were like ooh Rondo got penalized for missing games due to injuries. No, NBA fans are not crazy, they vote for guys who can make a jumper in addition to passing and getting to the ream for an occasional lay up. Guys our point guard can either pass to a hall of famer, gamble for steals and that is just about it. Rose can ball hog and shoot his team to a victory. Wall made Rondo look lame that other time in DC if you remember that embarrassing loss in DC.
Pass, gamble for a steal, pass, gamble for a steal, pass, hope Ray makes the basket so he makes the assist, gamble for a steal .. rinse lather repeat.

overrated by who? Celtics fans? i'm pretty sure almost all of our players are overrated by some degree if your asking celtics fans about them. But if you ask around the league, he seems perfectly rated.

Rondo is the best defensive point guard in the leauge. That is what is important.

How so?

Whoever hes guarding usually has big games. He also rarely can stay in front of his man.

To quote BballTim:

I just compared his Opponent Production stats vs the other starting point guards in the league. Rondo's first in the league in lowest eFG% allowed and fewest assists and rebounds allowed. He's second in lowest PER allowed and 4th in turnovers forced per 48 minutes.

I went to hoopdata to see the average production for point guards who have played 20+ games and 25+ minutes a game. Listed below are what Rondo allows per48 vs what the average starting pg produces (in parenthesis):

Points 17.9 (21)
eFG% .435 (.483)
Reb 3.7 (4.9)
Ast 8.0 (10.0)
TO 4.5 (3.6)
PER 12.6 (17.0)

He also has the best defensive rating of any pg among the league leaders on basketballreference.

And don't forget, this is a guy who's been dealing with plantar fasciitis and hamstring injuries all year. Constantly fighting through picks is obviously going to be a challenge for him.

Also on a side note...why did Rondo play 43 minutes again tonight? He's played 38+ minutes 8 games out of the last 11 (and 6 of those 8 games were 42+). Isn't this why we got Arroyo?

Are these the same NBA fans that voted in Allen Iverson last year and Yao Ming the past 2 years in a row? Those fans?

I agree that he is the top defensive point guard in the league. He just doesn't seem to be in the right mindset, but he is definitely the best fit for this team. I think he just needs more time to deal with the perk trade and jell with the five new guys.

Poor defense in the first half, I thought his second half defense was more than solid. But the Clippers were extra hot (seems like all the games we've been playing lately the teams have come quite hot shooting wise). Main problem with Rondo was his 4th quarter management when setting up plays, often we started our fist offensive motion with 10 seconds to go and he was doing a poor job moving the ball because of it.

But I won't complain much about his defense because he certainly was quite active in the 2nd half, but poor job in the first half and KG didn't help matters.

C'mon...Every player has good games and bad games and Rondo has had way more of the former than the latter.

By the way, is it me or have there has been an inordinate amount of threads claiming players are "overrated" or "underrated" recently?
