The Celtics, in their search for a backup point guard while Delonte West recovers from a sprained ankle, have come to terms with Carlos Arroyo on a pro-rated veteran’s minimum contract for the rest of the season, according to a team source.

Arroyo, pending a physical, may join the team tomorrow in Milwaukee.

Arroyo had been waived by Miami earlier this week to make way for the team’s signing of Mike Bibby, and was one of two veteran playmakers the Celtics were looking at. The other was thought to be Antonio Daniels, the long-time veteran who is attempting a comeback with the Texas Legends of the NBDL.

The make room for Arroyo, the Celtics informed backup center Chris Johnson following today’s practice that his contract was not being renewed.

Though Doc Rivers had expressed a desire to keep the backup center on the roster, the team had pressing needs elsewhere.

Even so, Johnson feels he opened a few eyes in a short time.

“I think they might have been a little surprised by me,” he said today.

So, no 2nd 10-Day contract for Chris Johnson but a former Heat instead.

  • Another undersized Celtic...
I never thought I'd say "it's a relief that we picked up Arroyo". That will hopefully give Rondo some rest for the next 22 games.

Good luck to CJ, hope he can put on weight sometime soon (although unlikely given he's 25 - if he hasn't done it by now he probably can't).

As for Arroyo, I hope he (along with Pavlovic) is simply insurance and never actually needed in important games. I guess it could be worse for 3rd string PG's

good to go now, we have quality depth at every position in case of an injury.

Good Job Danny!

nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

I'd much rather have signed Antonio Daniels...
bigger guard that can defend and hit the 3.
Arroyo's #s are inflated since coming from the Heat
Can't stop, Rondo!

Very good pickup. With glass Delonte, we really needed an emergency guy since Bradley could possibly cost us entire playoff games/series if he needed to be called upon. Really solid 3rd pg.

This will allow west to play some 2 also getting ray rest. Gives them depth at the 2 and 1....esp with west and wafer banged up. Plus he know Miami and their sets....if you call them that

Good.  That's the backup point I wanted.
Yup I'd have took him over even Bibby

Its official. The only thing that can prevent us from not winning banner 18 is health.
Krstić & Murphy >> injured Perkins and Erden
Arroyo & Pavlović >> injured Robinson and Daniels
Green >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Harangody
and don't forget possible 11-16 pick in 2012. and 31-36 pick in 2013.

well, it's nice to have a decent 3rd string pg knowing Dwest's injury history and also in case both West and Rondo get into serious foul trouble or ejections in a key game. Letting go of Arroyo may come back to haunt miami, Bibby sucks

that's a big plus. He also knows the mentality of the Heat players and any possible chemistry issues that we can exploit if needed.
